Hit-and-miss storms do little to ease muggy conditions

RALEIGH, N.C. — Hit-and-miss thunderstorms rattled windows, doused parking lots and knocked out power in some places Saturday but did little to cool the overall conditions, which will remain steamy through Father's Day Sunday.
Heavy but brief downpours were reported throughout Saturday evening across central and eastern North Carolina, and more than 14,000 customers of Duke Energy Progress were without power across the state at some point as a result of high winds that accompanied the storms.
Rich Cunningham heard the storm whip up outside his Raleigh home at around 8 p.m. and went outside just in time to see a neighbor's tree topple onto his pickup truck.
In Raleigh, a downed tree just off Hillsborough Street knocked out power to some traffic signals, and another tree was reported down over Poole Road.
Father's Day will be drier, and daytime highs will again climb into the upper 90s under mostly sunny skies.
Heat will stick around for the early part of the work week, and the area could see more 100-degree heat by Tuesday afternoon.
