More than 50 headstones were damaged over the weekend at a Fayetteville cemetery dating to 1785.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — More than 50 headstones were damaged over the weekend in a Fayetteville cemetery dating to 1785.

Police said Monday they received a report about the vandalism at Cross Creek Cemetery 1 on North Cool Spring Street. They are seeking the public's help to identify suspects.

The cemetery, police said, is the site of the oldest Confederate monument in North Carolina, which honors both Confederate and Union soldiers buried in unmarked graves near Cross Creek.
