Hillsboro pool complex goes to the dogs

Posted August 9

— Humans aren't the only ones who enjoy swimming, so a local swimming complex is going to the dogs.

The PAWS Aquatic Water Sports & Rehab in Hillsboro offers a unique environment for dog swim lessons.

Co-owner Julie Thomas said she grew up believing all dogs could learn how to swim. Although she acknowledged some dogs can get nervous around water.

"Panicking is more vertical and it's the front legs only and they don't use the back legs," said Thomas.

People bring their pups to the pool so the dogs can get accustomed to swimming.

"The big thing with swimming is you want them horizontal, that all four legs are going and it's relatively quiet," said Thomas.

Once dogs graduate from swim lessons, they head to co-owner Diane Kunkle, the dive master.

Dogs at PAWS can dock dive year-round because the swimming complex is one of three indoor facilities of its kind in the country – and the only one on the West Coast.
