Hillcrest High head football coach dies of West Nile

Posted August 29

— Friends, family and students are mourning the death of Hillcrest High School's head football coach.

Coach Cazzie Brown was taken off life support and died Sunday night, according to officials from the Canyons School District. Brown was put on life support last week after contracting West Nile virus.

Originally, doctors thought it was solely meningitis, but after test results came back Monday afternoon, they learned that Brown contracted West Nile virus, which led to him getting meningitis, a family spokesperson said.

Saturday, Brown's family welcomed dozens of players, parents and coaching colleagues to the University Hospital for visits, according to the Deseret News.

Brown leaves behind a wife, three children and dozens of heartbroken student-athletes who played for him.

Many teens took to Twitter to share their grief using the hashtag #HuskyStrong. They asked classmates to wear green on Monday in honor of Brown.
