High School Football Coach Faces Second DWI
The head football coach at a Robeson County high school faces a second charge of driving while impaired.
Posted — UpdatedMark Heil flipped his car twice while going around a curve on Secondary Road 2238 in Cumberland County, according to a police report. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which happened June 27.
Heil registered a 0.13 blood alcohol content in a breath test, according to a police report.
Heil, who coaches at Purnell Swett High School, was charged with DWI and reckless driving. His license has been revoked for 30 days, according to Cumberland County court records.
The Robeson County Board of Education learned of the charges against Heil late Monday, said school officials.
The school board was scheduled to meet Wednesday night but had not announced whether it would address Heil's arrest.
Officials said the school board also was unaware until Monday that Heil had pled guilty to DWI charges in 1991. That occurred during Heil's his first tenure as Purnell Swett's head football coach.
Heil left Purnell Swett to coach at Cape Fear High School in 1994. He returned to Purnell Swett last season.
Heil's first court appearance is set for Aug. 21, four days after his team's first game.
