Here's what happens when you drop 100 pounds of silly putty off of a 141-foot building

Tuesday was the ninth annual Silly Putty Drop, the day when N.C. State science and engineering summer campers see what happens when you drop a 100-pound ball of silly putty from the top of D.H. Hill Library bookstack tower and let it fall 141 feet onto N.C. State's brickyard.

Smaller balls of the stuff, which is actually made by Dow Corning not too far from the Triangle in Greensboro, bounced like rubber balls. But, when that massive ball of silly putty fell to the ground, "bounce" isn't the first word that I'd use to describe what happened next. The upside was that there were plenty of pieces of Silly Putty for campers and others to take home.

The Silly Putty Drop has a big claim to fame - it was ranked No. 16 on the Science Channel's show, "Outrageous Acts of Science," which still airs from time to time.
