Henderson man charged, dogs malnourished

Posted October 17, 2008

— Henderson Police arrested Samuel Fields, 46, of 902 Park Ave., after a report from Vance County animal control of malnourished dogs.

Animal Control Chief Alex Hargrove said his team found an emaciated dog tied to a tree. The flesh of the dog's neck had grown around a web collar and a chain, and his left hind leg was swollen.

Other dogs on the property had no apparent access to food or water, animal control reported.

Fields told animal control officers that he fed the tied dog daily, and that the leg injury resulted from the dog getting caught trying to jump the fence.

Fields was was charged with depriving the animals of necessary sustenance and denying medical attention.

He was jailed on $2,000 secured bond.

This is sad. I hope the best for the dog. All I can say for the owner is maybe he's related to an LEO, I hear they get off for these type things.

This is horrible! I don't want to see those pictures y'all are talking about, this is bad enough.

That poor, poor baby. He looks so sweet. I hope he finds a good, loving home.

Thank goodness for Animal Control Chief Alex Hargrove. Had these animals been found in Wake County, likely there would have been "no grounds to prove abuse" found by our Animal Control Chief. I've learned the abuse often doesn't end with the abuser, but with the system that doesn't recognize its responsibility toward these innocents. Let us decide that enough, is enough.

such a sweet looking dog. All they ever want is to love someone and be taken care of properly. And they love so unconditionally.

Please make an example out of this guy so that folks will know this is serious and illegal!!!

timmytim I have also seen the pictures. I have seen gross pictures before but never like that. When I opened the e-mail I almost passed out immediately. Max is safe now and in a vets care and going to a place on Monday who will take good care of him. He is out of harms way forever now. The person who did this to him...no words can describe.............

Oh! Poor guy! He looks so sweet and sad. Bless his heart. No animal (or person) should have to suffer at the hands of someone cruel. I hope he heals ok and finds a loving home.

PEOPLE, if you can not take care of an animal then why do you have one? There is so much cruelty in the world today. This wasn't the case back when people had more respect for one another. The more we took God out of everything the worse the world has gotten. Whe can't people see this happening? It's so obvious. I guess just more so to people that have been on this earth longer. People have no control over children anymore either. I was definitely not abused but when I did something I wasn't suppose to do I got more than a "Go stand in the corner". If you can't give respect then you don't deserve respect. Punishment has got to be harsher than what criminals get today or things are going to keep getting worse!!!!

The picture shown on the website is truly tame. I have seen the other pictures of this poor animal and to think that anyone could treat a defenseless animal like this is enough to make your stomach turn. This guy needs to be put in Jail in order to be an example that you can't get away with this nonsense.
