Help a Mom: Seeking outdoor destinations for family Christmas card pictures

Posted December 3, 2013

November 23, 2013. Raleigh, NC. The annual christmas tree lighting celebration takes place at North Hills in Raleigh, NC.

A Go Ask Mom reader posted this question on another holiday post last week. Here's what she asked:

Can anyone suggest a good outdoor place to take family Christmas card pictures?

Last year, a photo I snapped of my girls at JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh was on my family's Christmas card. I'd recommend other places with big outdoor spaces, including Duke Gardens in Durham, the N.C. Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, the museum park at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, Joyner Park in Wake Forest, Historic Oak View County Park in Wake County, and Annie Louise Wilkerson MD Nature Preserve in Raleigh.

But we are lucky to have so many other choices here in the Triangle as well.

Pullen Park, also Umsted. Umsted has a large picnic shelter in the Southern section with a terrace and fireplace.

The rose garden behind Raleigh Little Theater (Off Peace St, near NC State) has a nice grape arbor, and a lovely fountain. Pullen Park has a lot of places where you can be natural or with a building. But I definitely second the Art Museum and Botanical garden.

Check out the McCown-Mangum House at West Point on the Eno. We took Christmas pix there years ago, and they were beautiful. Our daughter wore a old-fashioned looking Velvet Christmas dress and had her teddy bear in a wagon. The best picture was at the front gate at the house. She looked like an American Girl doll.
