Help a Mom: Searching for slim shorts for boys

Posted April 2, 2013

Here's an email that I received from a mom who is having a tough time finding shorts that fit her young son:

I'm trying to find some size 4 slim shorts for my son, preferably canvas, twill, or denim. Size 4 regular will definitely fall off - even the adjustable waist kind. I was able to find 4S jeans that fit at JC Penney's last fall, but so far I haven't had much luck with finding shorts. When I was looking for jeans last fall I did check the re-sale shops first and was told that finding that size re-sale was next to impossible, so I bought the jeans new when I found them. I could cut them down and hem them if I have to, but I really don't want to do that. Jeans are a bigger bother than most things to hem. Any hints your readers may have will be helpful.

I also forgot to mention that I have resorted to ebay on several occasions with great results. I usually narrow my search with specifics like "Arizona shorts boys slim" of "Levi's boys slim". Hope this helps!

Most folks have recommended the places that I shop for my ultra slim boys, JCP Arizona brand both in the store and online followed by Old Navy (online only) have been my only hope. At Old Navy I order one of nearly everything they offer in the size we hope will fit. Then my boys try them on until we find that one that fits and I return all the others and order more pairs of the one that works. I've also had luck with Levi brand at Belk's at Crabtree Valley Mall. They have a better selection of sizes. I've also had success at returning to smaller sizes as long as they are longer shorts which have been in style in recent years. I feel your pain and Ive fond it gets even worse as they grow older. I have an 11 year old who can still wear a size 7 waist and a 15 year old who has a 26 inch waist and needs a 31 inch inseam in jeans!!!! Perhaps we slim slack mothers need to unite and start our own swap shop? :D

From my inbox: I have the same problem. My son is 10 and still wears a slim in pants and shorts. He always has to wear a belt. In shorts I have found that Old Navy and Osh Kosh have shorts with drawstrings. The ones at Old Navy are under $10!!!! Good luck shopping! It gets harder when they are older.

There is a Levi's outlet in Smithfield along with Osh Kosh, Children's Place, and Gymboree. Maybe one of those would carry slims. I need to check that myself. Also, if you have long pants that fit in the waist, but not length it's easy to shorten them for the summer!

Check Crazy 8 they are the sister store to Gymboree. My son wears slim sizes and I have had no problem finding him jeans that fit.

When my son was that age he lived in Levi's jean shorts and jeans because they carried 4S, 5S, 6S, etc... they were a life saver!!!
