Help a Mom: Searching for affordable, quality swing sets

Posted March 26, 2013

Here's an email a grandmother sent me:

My daughter and I are looking for a swing set this spring for my grandson. I wanted to check with you to see if you had any luck finding a great product for an affordable price.

Can you recommend a brand? (If you don't see the comments box below, you'll need to log in or sign up for a WRAL account. You can do that by going to the top of the page and clicking on either "log in" or "register").

Kids Korner Playsets are the best! Call Billie Ann! We used them last fall. We have four children and Billie Ann listened to them and us. We have the perfect playset now. They use pressure treated lumber and customize it to your needs. They are also very nice people. My playset is awesome!

I second Craigslist, you have be quick though the good ones go fast. We got a $1500 wooden set about 2 yrs old for $400. The family was moving and had to get the swing set gone.

I am the owner of Kids Korner Playsets and would be happy to talk to anyone interested in a quality custom built playset. We work with each customer to custom design a playset that not only meets their wants and needs but will also fit into a budget that they choose. All of our playsets can be modified and are custom built onsite and in most all cases no yard preparation is necessary as we can build just as well on un-level ground and extreme slopes. We can build anything from just swings to the backyard extreme and specialize in multi-level mega-forts with connecting bridges as well as forts that wrap around trees. We have built well over 1000 playsets and currently have playsets all over NC and in 6 states. Please feel free to call Billie Ann anytime at 919-730-3211 and be sure to visit our website at and our Facebook page where there are close to 5000 photos at:

We got one of those kits from Home Depot (or maybe Lowes) that has all the hardware in it, and then you buy the wood and assemble it. There are different configurations you can choose. My husband is handy, but it wasn't hard to build. It's been up almost 4 years and is still going strong with almost daily use by my 4 kids. It has a slide, 2 swings, a baby swing (our addition), and a trapeze/rings.

I would avoid sets from Walmart and BJs etc. They offer the lowest price but I will tell you that even a 4yo on the swing will rock the entire set. The set you but needs have posts that are set into the ground. The Walmart set we have is "staked" in the ground. NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR 4YO OR ABOVE.
