Help a Mom: Overnight summer camps for grade schoolers

Published: 2013-01-29 20:48:00
Updated: 2013-01-29 20:48:00

I received a message from a mom who is looking for a week-long sleep away camp for her son, who is about 9.

She tells me that she's looking at Camp Cheerio in the N.C. mountains and Don Lee Center near the coast. She would love to hear reviews of those camps and any others.

And thanks to all the Facebook fans who shared information about camps on Tuesday.

Camp Chestnut Ridge in Efland

I went to camp cheerio as a kid and LOVED it. I'm sure things of changed in the last 25 yrs but I hope it hasn't. I will be thinking of sending my child there when she is old enough

New LIfe Camp is right here in Raleigh but you would never know it once you get on the property. It has some summer camp classics - a pond with a raft and slide, dining hall, mail call and some updated amenities as well - new swimming pool, air conditioned gyms. The staff are wonderful and well trained. It is certainly the highlight of the summer for my kids ages 9-14. Great info on their website also.

Summer Sonsations Youth Camp is in Henderson, NC on Kerr Lake. Here is the website url in which you can check out the campground and amenities: http://shilohfamilyministries.org/. It is very reasonably priced.

Defintely Don Lee, but also any of the 4-H camps. There is a coastal near Columbia, NC, Betsy Jeff-Penn in the northern piedmont, and one near Asheville. Great experience and VERY affordable. Also if she has an interest in marine biology, Marinequest at UNC-W in Wilmington is excellent (though I think residential doesn't start until age 10)

Camp Birch Hill is a great overnight summer camp in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire! You can check them out by going to their website at www.campbirchhill.com .

Camp Kanata!!! I went there as a kid and loved it so much I went back and spent three summers there as a counselor. It is in Wake Forest, about 45 minutes away from Raleigh. It is associated with the YMCA and they have recently undergone some awesome renovations! Here is the link; http://campkanata.org/

We love Don Lee. They are great with kids and hire some of the best counselors around. We have a friend who sends their son there who has autism and it's the only camp they trust. Says a lot!

Camp Oak Hill in Oxford, NC

Camp Don Lee! My son is going again this summer, but for a two week session. He really likes the counselors, activities and has learned how to sail! Pretty location/reasonable price.
