Help a Mom: Need ideas for active preschooler, 11-month-old, six-month-old

Posted August 27, 2013

A local mom posted this question on Go Ask Mom's Facebook page the other day. It sounds like she's got her hands full and is looking for a fun place to get out of the house.

Here's her post:

Help! I need ideas! I have an active 3 year old boy who has a serious case of cabin fever, an 11 month old non-walker that wants to be down, and a 6 month old that likes to be held. Do you have any ideas of activities in the area (we are in [Fuquay-Varina]) that would be safe for all three kiddos and as stress free as possible for Momma?

My first thought: Get them outside as much as possible! And also ... this time will pass very soon!

I recommended parks and playgrounds (you can always check our database) and Go Play Outside Now in Garner. The Around Town gallery at Marbles Kids Museum is great for this age group. There's enough to keep the three-year-old busy, plenty of things the 11-month-old can pull up on, and lots of action for the six-month-old to watch. The Museum of Life and Science also has a wonderful area for younger kids inside its building.

Pumpkin patch season is nearly upon us as well, offering all sorts of outdoor activities. I'll have our Halloween and fall fun database updated in the next couple of weeks. Start looking for those to open in early to mid-September.

Arts & Crafts project for before bed....Take a jar with a tight lid, a non-toxic glow stick and some silver or multicolored glitter. Break the glow stick open & empty into the jar, add glitter, close tightly & shake. Glow in the dark "Fairies in a Jar"

If you have a triple stroller, come join us at Stroller Strides´╗┐! (or if your oldest is in preschool certain days). A lot of our moms say they 'don't know what they did before Stroller Strides' and come often, up to 6 days/week. ;) Great routine!

The indoor play spaces are always tempting but just because they're indoors doesn't mean that they are any "safer" than a typical playground and, they can be very "germ-y". My older child ended up with hand/foot/mouth within days of our only visit to an indoor play space in Morrisville when he was 2.5. We haven't been back since. Cary's parks & rec dept. has a lot of classes/activities for very young kids and a friend of mine with several kids said that most of the "classes" are do-able for a mom and multiple children.

I have a 20 month old and a 4.5 year old who are both really active. I like to take them to the NC State Arboretum. It is free and like a big park with lots of neat plants and flowers for the kids to see. And, lots of space to run. I like it at the younger ages too because there isn't any or playground equipment. I find that with my son as a toddler it's hard to watch him on the playground and watch my 4.5 year old too. So, they interact more and get to run around at the arboretum.

Stay & Play in Durham is a bit of a drive, but would be perfect! www.stayandplaysnackcafe.com, facebook.com/stayandplaysnackcafe

Invest in a small kiddie pool. Sit in the pool with all three little ones and let them splash away! My children love pool activities and always have, even at your childrens' ages.

Not sure if you are looking for a more structured activity or not but Kindermusik offers a family class that i believe includes all of your childrens ages. They have a couple of different centers in the area.
