Help a Mom: Looking for inexpensive photography classes

Published: 2013-01-22 20:40:00

I fielded this question last week from a mom who wants to learn more about photography.

She just got a new camera for Christmas and would love to know more about how to use it, but she doesn't have a lot of money to spend on a class. Here's what she wrote:

I am looking for a cheap photography class in or around the Apex area. Do any of your at-home mothers offer a photography classes for cheap?

She's found a couple of options, but they are out of her price range, charging between $100 and $300 for two-hour lessons.

Can you recommend a class? Please share in the comments below. (If you don't see the comments box below, you'll need to log in or sign up for a WRAL account. You can do that by going to the top of the page and clicking on either "log in" or "register").

I took a really great photography class through Wake Tech a few years ago. The price was right and the results were great. Highly recommend (and higher price does not necessarily mean better quality)

From my inbox:

Wake Technical Community College offers classes in Digital Photography. The above class is $65.00. There website is http://conted.waketech.edu.

http://www.jenniferweinberg.com/ might have helped had I given you the URL!! :0 Enjoy!

This lady has some really great classes and they are offered a LOT on Groupon/Living Social. My hubby gave me 3 in 2011 for Christmas presents.

There is currently a Groupon for an online class (note I live on the border between the Triangle and Triad so I get Groupons for both but you can buy them anywhere and this is used online so no driving)

Reach out to Heather Swanner (www.heatherswanner.net). My husband took a class with her, and we've used her a couple of times for events and family sessions. She's easy to work with/learn from, and has a good eye.

With regard to the photography class, rather than go to an actual class, I highly recommend "Learn and Master Photography" with Vince Wallace. They have a special going on right now, $149.00 for 15 DVD's. This was given to me as a gift and I am on the 2nd DVD after 1 month. He starts with the invention of the camera all the way through how your camera works, settings and how to take great pictures. You can learn at your own pace and go back and watch and listen over and over.

Try this... http://fridaycenter.unc.edu/pdep/ccs/index.htm#digital The teacher also has his own business... http://perconline.org/ Or this which could be free if you work for the state... http://fridaycenter.unc.edu/coursesyllabi/art356.html

Living Social has offered deals (1/2 price, $50) on two photography classes in the area recently.
