Help a Mom: First haircut

Posted October 22, 2013

hair salon

I received this email from a mom, whose son recently turned one. Here's what she wrote:

"Any suggestions on a place for his first hair cut? His hair is getting long and I am clueless about where to go. My salon has a 'no children' policy."

I took both of my girls to JJ's Kids Cuts on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh for their very first haircuts. It was a convenient location for me - right near my mom's house.

At JJ's, there's an indoor tube slide, kids get to pick a video to watch during the cut and they get to sit in special seats that look like cars. They also had a little package for parents to commemorate the first cut, including a little bag to save that baby curl in.

After that first cut, I took on the job, cutting their hair myself. I started taking my eight-year-old to Supercuts a couple of years ago when her hair got thicker, making it more difficult to trim. But I still do my younger daughter's hair.

I've heard good things about Snip-its in Brier Creek, but haven't been.

Where did you take your kids for their first hair cut? Who cuts their hair now?

My kids and I go to Sunflower Salon in Wendell/Lizard Lick area. Connie and Dana are wonderful! Only people I trust!

I would take him to a barber and make him feel like a little man, they know what they are doing.

Forgot to mention, Peek-a-Do does have a website and Facebook page you can visit.

I took my son to Peek-a-Do in Durham, near the Target at Streets of Southpoint. They have a first haircut package, which gets you a snip of the hair, a before and after picture and a certificate for $27. They are a children's salon, have videos playing at each station and have cool little themed chairs. I do recommend making an appointment, though. I tried to walk-in one Saturday morning and they were not able to accommodate me.

I do not recommend Snip its in Brier Creek. However, we have been to the one in Winston Salem and love it! The stylist was rude and not at all friendly. We also didn't get a good haircut. Love the concept though. Highly recommend any of the stylists at Great Clips in Apex near the Kroger. We ALWAYS get a great cut, and they take their time and everyone has been sweet to our son.

Ask for Miss Maria at JJ's Kids Cuts! she is great and my kids ask to go back!

I took my son to JJ's for his 1st cut and would NOT recommend! The cut looked like a bowl cut. It took her all of 2 minutes to do and he was very good. She even shaved his neck. Who shaves a baby's neck!? I have since taken him to Sports Clips twice and could not be happier! They have really done an excellent job on his hair. No more bowl cuts for my baby:)

We took our kids to Snip-It's for their first hair cuts. Went there for a while, but now go to a regular place since they've gotten used to the procedure and aren't scared or overly anxious anymore.

Kidz Kutz in Wake Forest! Ms.Debra did a great job with my sons first cut 12 years ago. Fun chairs, videos, play-area, picture and certificate of 1st cut. Now, as a "cool" 7th grader, he won't let anyone else cut his hair. We love Ms. Debra!
