Help a Mom: Favorite picnic spots for families

Our relaxing long Memorial Day weekend included a trip up to Durant Nature Park in north Raleigh for a short hike, picnic and playtime.

I don't get up here nearly enough, but every time I do go, I'm reminded how much I love this place. During our visit on Monday, we saw two deer, logs peppered with turtles sunning themselves, little lizards and all kinds of plants. We ate lunch at one of the picnic shelters and my girls spent more than an hour playing at the park's small playground.

I've written about this place before.Click here for that earlier post. And I've vowed we'll be back this summer for another picnic.

Other favorite spots for my family: Fletcher Park in Raleigh and Joyner Park in Wake Forest.

Which leads me to my question today: Where are your favorite picnic spots in the region?

Duke Gardens - but it is a big place, plan to walk a bit before you get to a good spot.

We Like Durant Nature Park and Joyner Park too, but my favorite now is Horse Shoe Farm Park off the new part of the greenway in North Raleigh. It is located just off of Ligon Mill. You can see the big suspension bridge from Hwy 401. We love the wide open space to play frisbee, catch. We can let our dog run. There is geocaches within the park. Just a lot of fun and we love the raw nature. Not a lot of development which detracts from the natural beauty of the area.

Blue Jay Park on Falls Lake off Six Forks Rd.It is only about 10 minutes from Wake Forest on Hwy 98, but a bit of a drive from Raleigh, but so worth it!! Two new playgrounds, close bathrooms, shaded huge sandbox (renovated last year), covered shelters, picnic tables, large field for running, kite flying, soccer, trails that lead down to the lake...it is awesome!

Historic Oakwood Cemetery has a great place for picnics in the front lawn just inside the main gates!
