CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — U.S. Highway 64 was closed in both directions Sunday night as a helicopter aided in the rescue of two people in the Haw River.

Authorities said that Patrick Pugh and Gina Wright, both 19, were in a kayak and had fallen into the river at about 6 p.m.

Authorities said the pair were not in danger of drowning because they were able to keep themselves afloat.

A National Guard helicopter had to wait for a storm to clear before pulling the man and woman from the water just before 11 p.m.
