Temps continue to soar across central NC
The heat wave that set in over the weekend generated record highs for a second consecutive day in central and eastern North Carolina on Tuesday as temperatures climbed into the triple digits in some areas.
Posted — UpdatedA heat advisory is in effect for the entire area from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and the National Weather Service said high temperatures are expected to be between 98 and 101 degrees. Heat index temperatures could climb to as high as 106 degrees.
"It's a good idea to take it easy if you are working or playing outside today," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said. "If you have to do work outside, get it finished before 10 a.m. or wait until after 8 p.m. if possible. That includes exercising and taking the dog for a walk."
Temperatures hit 99 degrees by 2 p.m at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The record high for June 16 at RDU was set in 1981, when the high temperature reached 98 degrees.
"We set a new record at RDU for the second day in a row today," WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said. "Many areas south of Raleigh hit 100 degrees."
Temperatures will cool off a bit on Wednesday, but only into the mid-90s as the chance for afternoon showers and storms bumps up slightly. Temperatures late in the week will stay in the mid-and upper-90s before settling into the mid-90s over the weekend.
"We will see some hit-or-miss storms, but not everyone will get wet," Maze said.
Overnight lows will continue to stay in the mid-70s for the next week.
