RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh stopped waste collection early Wednesday amid safety concerns for workers outside in triple-digit temperatures.

The delay affected the collection of garbage, recycling and yard waste on 12 routes, city officials said.

On Thursday morning, crews will resume collection from where they left off Wednesday, city officials said. Residents should keep their garbage cans, recycling bins and yard waste at the curb.

The city will not issue warnings and fines during this period, officials said.

Delays to waste collection may continue throughout the week, officials warned. If necessary, crews will go out on Saturday to complete collection for the week.

Raleigh's Solid Waste Services department asked residents not to call the department but directed them to Find My Service Day Web site for more information about waste collection.
