Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q will donate 5 percent of all sales from the restaurant's Wake and Johnston County locations on Tuesday, July 28, to the Me Fine Foundation, a great local nonprofit that helps sick children and their families.

The Me Fine Foundation provides financial assistance and emotional support to parents and caregivers whose children are receiving long-term medical treatment form Duke and UNC children's hospitals.

Me Fine often is the last chance for some families who are struggling with not only the serious illness of a child, but a mounting financial burden of medical bills and lost work hours. Me Fine’s financial support including mortgage/rent assistance to prevent eviction, utility payments to halt disconnection, grocery bills, payment of medical bills, and even help with final expenses if a child dies, according to a press release.

I recently wrote about Me Fine's SuperKids Capes program, which provides custom-made superhero capes for kids who have finished a treatment or reached a milestone.

This isn't the first time Me Fine and Smithfield's have teamed up. In past years, Smithfield’s has donated food, gift cards and been a supporting sponsor of the Me Fine Gala, which is scheduled for Sept. 26.
