Head north to avoid Fortify on way to the fair

Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has this advice for for people who want to go to the State Fair but don't want to drive through the Fortify construction zones: Go north.
Travelers from the east will be most affected.
The DOT recommends that those coming from the east choose Interstate 440 westbound to circumnavigate Raleigh's downtown. Exit on Wade Avenue to get to Blue Ridge Road or skip Wade Avenue and exit on Hillsborough Street.
State Fair traffic is expected to slow travel on both Interstates 40 and 440 approaching Wade Avenue, Blue Ridge Road, Edwards Mill Road, Trinity Road, Wade Avenue, NC Highway 54 and Hillsborough Street in the vicinity of the fairgrounds through Oct. 25.
Congestion will be especially high during evening and weekend hours when fair crowds are at their peak. Those not headed to the fair are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes away from the fairgrounds if possible. Those attending the fair are advised to carpool or take a State Fair shuttle, drive with caution and obey all signs and law enforcement officers.
