— Police have charged an employee of Hayes Barton Baptist Church with stealing more than $135,000 from the church.

Robert Garland Lahr, 49, of 917 Clay Hill Drive in Knightdale, was charged Jan. 4 with obtaining property by false pretense in excess of $100,000. He was being held Thursday in the Wake County jail under a $150,000 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, Lahr racked up $136,324 in personal purchases on a church credit card and manipulated the payroll accounts and made unauthorized transfers between accounts to cover it up.

Stealing in the House of the Lord. He was probably the most JUDGEMENTAL member in the church and out the church. Now look at him. You see what he does in the dark!!! I tell you, he is no better than a street criminal and he need to spend alot of time behind bars so he can be with his TRUE element.

if he was in need, why didn't he go to the administration and ask for help rather than stealing from his employers? Pride is not a good quality to have.

++++Since churches are tax free and don't submit their accounting books to any sort of oversight, they could make up whatever numbers they want. Otherwise, the public would see just how much tax dodging they do with all their investments, stock dividends, real estate holdings, etc.

Personally, I’m tired of these institutions living off the taxes of hard-working people. Tax The Church!

Some churches DO NOT PAY for unemployment either...and they can get by with doing it....although it is NOT LEGAL....

+++++He is human and humans make mistakes. It's not our place to judge but to hope that if the accusations are true, he learns from his mistake....not to steal.

Might be quite surprised at what "men of GOD" do....interesting that some people "think they are better than anyone else and can do no harm".....it is really very sad.....I hope he gets what he deserves....

How do we know this is true?
