Harris Teeter shoppers vent about possible sale

Published: 2013-02-13 09:31:00

The Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported that Harris Teeter is considering putting itself up for sale. What will this mean for all of the loyal Harris Teeter shoppers out there? Well that depends on who buys the chain.

Reuters reported that Kroger and Publix would likely be interested in the Matthews, NC-based grocer. Publix has just entered the Charlotte market with stores in South Carolina and Kroger has stores throughout North Carolina.

According to the reports, Harris Teeter shares increased 6.6% with the news of a possible sale. At this point, they have retained the financial company J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Until there is an actual buyer, there is no telling what will happen to Harris Teeter, double coupons and Super Double coupons.

As many of you posted on the blog this morning, it would be a shame to see Harris Teeter stores bought by a company that does not offer the kinds of deals we see now. But if that does happen, we'll just work that much harder to find the best deals and make ends meet.

Feel free to vent your sadness, frustration, utter hopelessness (just kidding) and general thoughts on the possible sale of Harris Teeter.

It doesn't matter who might buy the chain, if it's folded in as part of their corporate existing policies, they'll lose me as a customer.

One of the articles I read was talking about the WalMart ad campaign impact and how WalMart is considering opening stores that will be strictly groceries, community market type format. And yet, you won't find me shopping there either!

I hope HT doesn't sell out, I really do. It would mean a loss of the highest customer service standards in the industry, no one does it better - no one!

Nancy, if Publix buys the chain, we may see similar customer service to that of HT. Their coupon policy is not as generous though. In the SC stores, they double coupons up to 50 cents.

Nancy,

I have been in one of those Walmart Neighborhood stores and there is one opening across the street from my HT. I won't shop there either. I do not like the feel of the store and find their prices to be high since they do not have a decent coupon policy or sales.

I would hate to lose HT, they are my primary store and I agree their customer service is second to none.

Oh, please, don't change HT! Everything's going too good with them. Any change, in my opinion, would be *bad*. Nancy, Walmart has had market type stores in AR for quite awhile. I noticed them when I visited my sis in Fayetteville. Never been in one though.

That's the problem, the coupon policies of any other chain (save Lowes which suffers do to horrible customer service repeatedly that I've gotten in the stores) are weak at best, non existent at worse. I'll spend more at Aldi's then :)

Noooooooo...

On the up side, maybe I should buy some of their stock...

drcyndimd - only if you plan a short sale on that stock ;) If Kroger or some other chain buys them .......well, you understand.

Nancy - absolutely. Thanks.

Terrible idea! Harris Teeter not only has outstanding customer service, but their stores are always clean and neat. You can't say the same about any other store in the Triangle. The Lowe's Foods stores that I've been to are either dirty or have horrible customer service...or both. Kroger, blah. Food Lion, nope not even close. Harris Teeter is by far my favorite store! I would fall into a deep depression if there was no longer a Harris Teeter.
