Susan Orenstein, a Cary-based psychologist and relationships expert, returns to remind us all how important it is for moms to have a great support system.

"Being a mom is so challenging in so many ways," said Orenstein, a mom of two. And unlike a task completed at work or an empty laundry basket at home, there's no quick acknowledgement of a job well done.

We all need to find people in our lives who we can seek out for advice and to share those funny and frustrating stories, Orenstein said. And we need to feel comfortable with those friends and family so that we can really open up and not be concerned about what they might think of us, she said.

So many moms compare themselves to other moms, who might seem perfect on the outside. But it's impossible to compare yourself with somebody else when you don't know how they're really doing on the inside.

In this video, Orenstein talks about the importance of finding that support system and opening ourselves up to developing good friendships.

Orenstein is with Orenstein Solutions in Cary. She'll be a speaker at the Happy Mama Conference & Retreat in Durham, which is July 25 to July 27, at the Washington Duke Inn. It is designed for moms with children with "invisible" special needs. The weekend includes speakers on wellness, self-care and overcoming mom guilt, along with activities such as yoga and Zumba.
