The House Democratic Caucus has elected Rep. Larry Hall of Durham as their leader in the chamber.

Hall has served in the House since 2006 and has been Democratic whip since 2009. He will likely succeed retiring Rep. Joe Hackney, D-Orange, as minority leader when the General Assembly reconvenes next month.

“I am honored by the trust my colleagues placed in me,” Hall said in a statement. “I look forward to working with each of them to find new and innovative ways to move North Carolina forward. Families across our state are continuing to struggle, and we are committed to making job creation and economic development our top priorities. We must also keep our commitment to public education in this state and protect access to higher education at our universities and community colleges.”

A practicing attorney in Durham, he was appointed chairman of the North Carolina Courts Commission in 2011.
