Halifax Schools to Cut Jobs

Posted April 25, 2008

— The Halifax County School district plans to cut 67 positions from the payroll in order to balance the budget, a spokesman said Friday.

The 67 jobs represent 8.7 percent of the district's workforce, and cuts will come from all departments, according to a press release.

The school board will discuss the specifics in meetings on April 30 and May 5.

How do you cut a school nurse job and it is not paid with local funds?? Both SNFI and Nurse/Social Worker team positions were paid with state monies. What's up with that????

These are all state or federal positins. There is no way that Halifax County would have that many people paid out of local funds. I was finance director for Northampton schools for several years. We had a total of 10 people paid out of local county funds. Everyone else employed either were paid out of state allotment funds or federal funds. By the time you pay the persons salary, matching retirement, hospitalization, social security even the lowest paid person it would cost about 25,000 per person on the payroll. Only part of the story is here-- dont know what the rest of it is.

Do not cut the teachers. The people that need to be cut are the aids and office people that dont do that much and all they do is sit around and drink soda pop, do their nails and talk about "whats for Lunch" and when the bell rings, that are just flappin their gums....

Unlike Wake County Schools, Halifax County Schools have lost almost 20% of their student population in 5 years (1000+ students) and not made a single cut in employees. Hence why they are now having to cut so many staff members.

I thought the lottery would save their jobs. whats the problem?

And why did Halifax Co schools not do what Wake did? Threaten to cut salaries and programs if the citizens did not cough up the dough? Or could it be that there is a system out there that will try to stay within their budget?
