— A judge sentenced a Halifax man to probation for misdemeanor convictions in a hit-and-run that killed a Weldon woman last year.

Jonathan Wilson, 18, was convicted of two counts of misdemeanor hit-and-run with personal injury in connection with the July 14, 2011 wreck that killed Tomekia Richardson, 25, and injured Natasha Pitchford, 22, of Roanoke Rapids.

A judge sentenced Wilson to 90 days in jail but suspended it in place of 10 years' probation.

Wilson said he swerved to miss a bicycle and hit the women who were crossing N.C. Highway 1651. He told authorities that he fled the scene because he was afraid.

What actually happened in this case is the defendant was tried before a jury on two counts of FELONY hit and run. The jury returned a verdict of guilty to two misdemeanor hit and run charges. There was no plea bargain. The maximum sentence under law for a charge of misdemeanor hit and run is 45 days. Under the law if a defendant does not have a prior record the sentence MUST be suspended with the defendant being placed on probation. The defendant in .. this case did not have a prior record. So the judge imposed the harshest sentence available under the law.

None of you were in the court room when the sentence was handed down, how do you know that the families of the girls killed didn's ask the judge to do this???

Just goes to show that our legal system is TOTALLY BROKEN - Probation for killing a woman and fleeing the scene - ARE YOU KIDDING ME. So everyone in this state can go ahead and kill someone one in a hit a run and just get probation - this is not OK. I feel sorry for the woman's family they lost a loved one forever and this guy gets off pretty much without any real punishment. This JUDGE SHOULD BE SMACKED

what about the bike rider. 18 yo kid an you are all screaming for his head. Scuba girl you have mome sympathy for the homosexuals then this kid. Just a bad accident. Where is your "forgiveness" and "love" now, but the people that don't want homoxexuals to marry are the bad guys?

Just think, if the bicycle was not there, most likely this accident would not have happen.. what did the bicyclist get, if anything , for being in the way in the first place?????

Who is the judge (as usual, great reporting by RAL) and how did it get bargained down from a felony in the first place?

  • ncpilot2 May 8, 2012

This is why the criminal repetition rate is so high, because of an inept legal system.

IMHO this is TOTALLY WRONG. He left the scene of a accident, that SHOULD have gotten him more than 90 days! He KILLED one person and injure another; that SHOULD have gotten him YEARS in prison (10 maybe) NOT probation! Who knws if he was DUI or high on drugs. They located him after the accident. I think that judge should be removed from the bench!
