Growlers for growlers: Dog-focused bar opening in Durham
The Bull City's first dog-focused bar is expected to open by the end of the year.
Posted — Updated"Five years ago, we started Barley Labs as a way to celebrate two of the things we love most -- dogs and beer," Chu said. "Our dream was always to have a space where we could celebrate these loves in a larger way. Finally, we are able to make that dream a reality."
"From the start, our business has been inspired by the love we have for and our experience with our dogs," Beaudry said. "With this new shop, we aren't just thinking about how to make the humans happy, but we are very focused on how to make the dogs comfortable and happy, too."
The venue will offer free dog treat samples, beds and toys for dogs to enjoy in the store, educational workshops and adoption events.
Owners say they are especially focused on catering to fearful or shy dogs.
"Our dog, Barley, has some social challenges, particularly at and around our house; but she's great when she's out and about as long as people are respectful of her space," Chu said. "Our goal with the bar and gift shop is to create an environment where people feel safe bringing their dogs. We will try to reinforce good human behavior, such as reminding people to ask before petting and never to pet a working/service dog."
