Growing Mount Olive College upgrades its name

Posted December 16, 2013

Mount Olive College is getting a new name for the new year.

The small Christian college will become the University of Mount Olive on Jan. 1. The name change was recommended by administrators and approved this month by the Board of Trustees.

Board members said the change reflects the school’s growth and development, will boost branding and marketing efforts and help with recruitment.

“We believe the word ‘university’ more accurately reflects the current complexity of our academic programs and ultimately enhances the value of a Mount Olive degree for past, present and future graduates,” Board Chairman Darrell Horne said in a statement Monday.

CJW: what is wrong with changing its name to University?

What's wrong with being a college these days?

    Who's next? Boston College?

'Upgrades it's name".....Really. I do wish you would consider your headlines WRAL. It is not an upgrade, it is a change, representative of the expanded curriculum and degrees available. To say it is an upgrade insinuates that the term college is akin to 'Acme School". One is no better than the other, they just have different offerings. Geez.

Haters gonna hate. The school offers graduate degrees and has multiple campuses. It's been extremely successful the last few years. A well-deserved name change.

I agree with whistler below, Mount Olive University sounds much better.

I think Mount Olive University sounds better than the University of Mount Olive.

Any institution offering advanced degrees (Masters, Doctorates etc.) and meeting certain standards is permitted to use the University designation. Just because you never made it past 8th grade isn't a reason to complain about a private institution deciding to change its' name to address the curriculum it offers. Your jealousy simply makes you look weak and pathetic.

My son is a junior there and I must say this has been a perfect fit for him. The professors are wonderful and caring, the campus is small enough for good relationships... worth every penny!

And we wonder why colleges experienced grade inflation. Next we'll see Durham Tech upgrade its name to "The Technical University of North Carolina at Durham" and Forest View Elementary upgrade its name to "The Elementary University of Forest View".

So it's upgraded from an exaggeration to a complete confabulation.
