Group with signs, banners slows traffic on I-540

Posted September 11, 2013

A group of people holding signs and banners on a Six Forks Road overpass slowed traffic on westbound Interstate 540 Wednesday morning.

Drivers began tapping their brakes prior to 8 a.m.

No wrecks were reported because of the slow downs. It wasn't clear why the group set up shop on the overpass.

There is a time and a place for everything...540 between 7am-8am is not the time nor the place.

I drove past the group hoovering over 540. You can imagine how many drivers hit the brakes almost causing an accident. If they cause an accident the WHOLE GROUP should be held responsible.

For all you people all righteously indignant about the supposed distraction these protesters created, I ask you this: Which is more distracting:

    A. A group of Obama protesters with banners and signs
    B. A group of Bush/Cheney protesters with banners and signs
    C. A big overhead sign that says "Fall of Neuse Road Exit 1 mile"
    D. A billboard with a half-naked lady advertising a plastic surgeon
    E. A billboard with a McDonald's cheeseburger
    F. Your kids arguing in the backseat
    G. None of the above

Distractions are EVERYWHERE. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS A DRIVER TO PILOT YOUR VEHICLE IN A MANNER IN WHICH YOU DO NOT CRASH INTO ANYTHING!!!!

I remember when the PA Dept. of Transportation crews would put signs throughout highway work zones entitled 'give 'em a brake.'

This article reminded me of that.

This is not the first time that a group has done this at the same location. I don'k know if it is the same group as before. I saw it from on top of the bridge as I got on I-540. I don' think hey slowed traffic. It is always backed up bumper to bumper there in the mornings heading west.

I love the bias this extremely short and uninformative article shows.

The right of peaceful assembly is a wonderful thing. Unless they are actually (physically) impeding the flow of traffic, thus creating a hazard - the police have no reasonable authority to take any action. Of course, most of the comments on the board would be more supportive if they were carrying anti-Bush or anti-McCrory banners and signs. WRAL would certainly have dispatche a live broadcast crew to cover that, as well.

What would be the charge if they were arrested? They're not blocking traffic.
