DURHAM, N.C. — Like an oasis in the desert, Gregoria's Cuban Steakhouse's outdoor patio sits tucked away off of Hillsborough Road. This Durham restaurant has seen a resurgence since January when it reopened at its new location - just a year after a fire destroyed their Chapel Hill Road location.

Over brunch, Gregoria's general manager Michael Edwards told us that the fire occurred as owners were renovating the second floor to add seating. An investigation found that the fire was probably sparked by a cigarette thrown from the bus stop outside.

The 45-seat restaurant was beloved by its regulars for its cozy atmosphere. Gregoria's new home is much larger with seating for more than 200. The building has the feel of a reception venue, but was actually the home of New China Inn for awhile. Their kitchen was outside where Gregoria's relaxed patio now resides.

While at Gregoria's, the Out and About team sampled some tasty brunch items, including the Cuban-style French toast (served with a sweet guava maple syrup) and their Spanish Omelet stuffed with a great mix of chorizo, peppers, cheese, tomato and cilantro. The Tortilla Española, a Spanish egg and potato tart, was filling but light like quiche. The yuca hash was also an addictive side item!

We were also a fan of their homemade sopita butter served with fresh bread.

For dessert, we fell in love with their Tres Leches Cake - a traditional Spanish cake featuring three milks. The chocolate lava cake was decadent with the inside being more solid fudge than lava. Perfect if you want to savor each bite. The flan was also pretty tasty.

Gregoria's is participating in Triangle Restaurant Week. Their menu features three courses for $30. Entrees offered include a nice mix of chicken, pork or their famous steak!
