A 23-year-old Greenville man was arrested Monday evening after police found him choking a woman in a parking lot on Whitaker Drive, police said.

Officers responding to a domestic call about 7 p.m. fought with Ricky Cornell Roberson before taking him into custody after they discovered him trying to strangle a woman. Police said he also assaulted and communicated threats to several family members during the incident.

Roberson was taken to the Pitt County jail and charged with assault by strangulation, four counts of second-degree kidnapping, five counts of assault on a female, malicious conduct by a prisoner, two counts of assault on a government official and injury to personal property.

He was in the Pitt County jail Tuesday under an $850,000 secured bond.
