— A 77-year-old Greenville man shot one of two men who authorities say broke into his home early Wednesday.

Albert Atkinson was at home, along with a 47-year-old woman and two men, ages 55 and 59, when two men busted in the front door of their home at 217 River Road Estates around 1:20 a.m., said Christy Wallace, a spokeswoman for the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.

Atkinson got out a handgun and exchanged gunfire with an intruder carrying a black revolver, Wallace said. The men then fled.

Reginald Watson Jr., 20, of 8819 Prison Camp Road in Robersonville, later came to Pitt County Memorial Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to the chest and leg.

Investigators charged Watson with armed robbery and first-degree burglary. After he was released from the hospital, he was placed in the Pitt County jail. He was given a $300,000 secured bond.

Wallace said investigators are still trying to identify the second intruder.

This can't be real, the man attempted to commit a robbery and lives on 8819 Prison Camp Road in Robersonville. His life must be a self fulfilling prophecy. He should have stayed home and watched TV or went and looked for a job. I guess instead of looking for a job he decided to get off his back side and spending the next few year in college at State Penn. He did very well on the entrance exam

The old man should get a larger caliber weapon or Hydra-Shok or Cor-Bon ammunition, either one whould have stopped the intruder in his tracks.

By the mere fact that the inturder is alive and flapping, the old man might have left himself open to a lawsuit for causing damage private property.

Since I don't know that much about the law I will leave it there.
