Green Hope's 'Excel master' taking part in international contest
Microsoft Excel generates plenty of frustration for the millions who use it to track data, but for Green Hope High School senior Daniel Hill, the software, and his mastery of it, has led to national recognition.
Posted — UpdatedHill's mastery of Excel 2010 earned him a win at a student national championship competition in June, and this week, he will be in California for an Excel competition against students from across the globe.
Hill said he's developed a unique strategy for trying to bring home a win.
"I tricked myself into thinking I could definitely win (at nationals), and I'm trying to do that for the worlds," he said. "That's a little more difficult."
Marty Roettegen, Hill's teacher at Green Hope says he has nothing to worry about, and her past experience should give him some confidence. The last two national Excel champions came from her class.
"I have challenged him, because my previous two finished third in the world," Roettgen said. "His job is to come in first."
Hill, who says he seriously took up Excel in 2013, said perseverance is the key to becoming an Excel master.
"You have to have the determination and the persistence to deal with it even if it's not giving you what you want," he said.
