As they describe themselves: As North Carolina’s most effective gun rights organization, Grass Roots North Carolina (GRNC) was created in 1994 as an independent, all-volunteer 501(c)(4) not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving constitutional freedoms. Most – but not all – of the organization’s projects are devoted to defending the individual right to keep and bear arms. More here.

On the web: www.grnc.org

Affiliates and brands: NC Free Enterprise Foundation publishes and otherwise distributes information under its own brand.

Network*: Independent, conservative

Funding: According to forms filed with the North Carolina Secretary of State's office, Grass Roots North Carolina raised $26,959 in 2011.

IRS 990: Grass Roots North Carolina raised less than the minimum threshold that would require that it file a full 990 form.

State Information: Click here for more information from the N.C. Secretary of State's office.

Lobbyist: Grass Roots North Carolina has not registered a lobbyist for the 2013 legislative session.

Media Profile: Grass Roots North Carolina is focused on gun rights. Although it is not directly aligned with a political party or with the Pope Foundation, its views on gun ownership are decidedly conservative in the modern political context. The group is most often quoted on stories about gun rights and lobbies for laws that expand the ability of North Carolina citizens to carry firearms.

* Many of the public policy think tanks and advocacy groups active in North Carolina fall into one of two camps: A liberal circuit with ties to the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and a conservative circuit with ties to the John William Pope Foundation. For more, click here.
