OXFORD, N.C. — Granville County authorities are investigating what was initially believed to be a fatal crash as a homicide, Sheriff Brindell Wilkins said Monday.

Thomas Lee England was found dead in his truck on Redding Road Friday afternoon. The truck had run into a tree on the dead-end road off N.C. Highway 96 north of Oxford.

Deputies determined that England, who lived on Redding Road, had been shot before the crash, Wilkins said. Investigators are following several leads in the case, he said.

The shooting occurred about a mile from the home of Jerome and Dora Faulkner, who were killed on New Year's Day in what authorities have called a cross-country crime spree by a Texas man and his son, but Wilkins said England's death wasn't connected to the Faulkner case.
