RALEIGH, N.C. — Cynthia New Benton, 63, died Friday night at the hospital after she was pulled out of her burning Raleigh home, officials said.

Firefighters arrived around 6:15 p.m. at the home on Huntleigh Drive after a neighbor reported the fire. Heavy fire and smoke were coming from the second floor when crews got there.

Firefighters found the woman, who was a grandmother, unconscious in a hallway due to the heat and smoke inhalation. She was taken for treatment to WakeMed where she died.

Benton was the only person in the house at the time of the fire.

Officials said the fire started in the kitchen and ruled it accidental.
