Grand jury doesn't indict in Southern University killings

BATON ROUGE, La. — A grand jury has declined to indict a Florida native in the deaths of two 19-year-old Southern University students in April, and he is free.
The Advocate (http://bit.ly/2cxavbP ) and WBRZ-TV (http://bit.ly/2cKGYLp ) report that prosecutors could try again to charge 23-year-old Ernest Bernard Felton if new evidence turns up.
The panel charged 25-year-old Brandon Henderson with one count of aggravated assault, but cleared him Wednesday of murder in the deaths of Annette January and Lashuntae Benton.
A hearing is scheduled Friday on a request to reduce his bond from $500,000.
Prosecutors say Henderson fired in the air and Felton then fired steadily while walking toward Henderson's car. Ballistics tests showed bullets from Felton's handgun hit both women.
Felton is originally from Miami. He played on Southern's football team for one season.
