Young writers - from grade school to high school - are sought for a couple of writing contests.

The first is the annual PBS Kids Writers Contest for kids in kindergarten, first, second and third grade. Stories are accepted through March 20. Each contest participant will receive a Certificate of Achievement. First, second and third place winners will receive prizes. First and second place winners will have their stories animated on-air and online. UNC-TV also will submit the first place winners from each grade to PBS KIDS for national judging.

UNC-TV's website has information and submission details.
And ... a completely different contest, the North Carolina Bar Association’s Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Section has announced a sustainability essay contest, open to interested high school, college, graduate, or law school students. The deadline is May 1. In 4,000 words or fewer, writers are asked to explain how the State of North Carolina could better promote sustainable development, according to a description of the contest.

The winner receives $250 and publication of the essay in the fall edition of Environmental News, the quarterly publication of the Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
