GPS-Linked Phone Safety System in Works at UNC-CH

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is installing a new safety system that uses GPS in special phones to locate students.

Students can set an alarm on the phone. If they do not turn it off, the phone alerts campus police. University officials say it can also be used to spread campus-wide safety alerts.

The system was in the works before the Virginia Tech tragedy.
