I am delighted the hummingbirds that come to my feeders have not migrated yet. Each day they are here is a gift for me. I will surely miss them when they leave.

There's a red-headed woodpecker in my neighborhood, too -- I haven't seen it in over a month, though. Twice, I saw it beside the road on a stopsign and on the side of the road picking food from the roadway.

Java, I need to comment in here. I JUST spotted a RedHeaded Woodpecker over the weekend. I did not see it this spring (first year that has happened). That is usually when I see it around Mid May.

Seeing it, and next door they also saw it, so I know I was not alone in spotting it. Makes me comfortable in it's still here. Their numbers are dropping (in population). I was asked to report sightings to the local store I buy my seed, she is reporting to the Audubon Society the sightings.

Aren't the Pileated's great to have around? I must have 2-3 nesting couples in my area! Winter time they work as an alarm clock around January for AM feeding.

I plan to post a blog soon about the squirrels in my backyard -- once they found the bird feeders, I placed TWO squirrel corn feeders at the corner of the yard. Today, there were FOUR squirrels out there eating at the same time!

Just posted a new gallery with some new pictures -- including bluebirds nesting in the walnut tree, and those huge pileated woodpeckers from this morning!

Good morning, everybody! This morning, there were TWO pileated woodpeckers in the backyard. I don't see those around very often, much less TWO of them: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pileated_Woodpecker/lifehistory

Don't worry, I got pictures! I'll upload them soon.

How's the bird watching going? There's a bluebird perched on the mailbox as I type this, and I watched two vultures fight over, kill, and eat a huge black snake in the backyard yesterday!

It's 8:30PM and almost completely dark outside, but I can STILL see the little hummingbird shadows flying from feeder to feeder!

I'm going to upload another gallery pretty soon with my latest bird pictures. I was just on the deck porch earlier, and I've got hummingbird feeders at opposite ends of the porch -- those hummingbirds (at least 4 of them) continuously zoom back and forth around the place! A couple minutes ago, I caught THREE sitting at the same feeder (and that's something I don't see very often around here). I think they were all females, so that might explain why they weren't very aggressive at all.

Your hummingbirds basically pose and model while you take pictures, headlong! Those are great photos! The ones in my backyard are a lot more skeptical of me. The other evening, though, one young hummingbird (didn't even have a red throat yet) flew up to me a couple feet away and stared at me, checking me out from all different angles. I couldn't help but laugh.
