I am an MBA student at NCSU working on a team project focusing on an
innovative form for treating migraines.  We need to interview 10-15 migraine
sufferers in order to get an understanding of how the innovation might satisfy
their needs.  We were wondering if your group would be a source for contacting
anyone willing to participate in this study.  All information gained would be
considered strictly confidential.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Mod, yes I was. I was seeing him for my other problem, the head shakes from nerve damage to the ears as well as for the migraines. He got it stable and released me to my regular Dr.

OMG, Mod! that's awful. Mine, with insurance, is $30 a month. With the generic it will go to $10 a month.

Well, the DR wants me to go to 200mg a day, but Blah don't want me to on count of it does affect my memory also a little now. She's affaird it will be more if I go up on the meds. He also gave me the imitrex to try.

MOM...the perils of being disabled, trying to pay for part B ins (275.00) a month plus copays on drugs. My wife who is self employed gets to pay all of our ins bill for her and the 2 kids (870.00) a month plus copays on drugs. No dental plan and we have one in braces

I have to see a orthopedic, a rheumologist (sp) and a neurologist at least every 6 months for medical problems. I'm still under Dr. care from the last knee surgery fiasco.

Naughty... I understand about the tremors, we have a genetic type mine aren't bad and are probably part of an othro problem. My son who is 20 can no longer hold a pencil and has to type everything. He refuses to take tranquillizers because he doesn't like the way he feels. It will probably keep him out of med school

Mod, the Dr. said I have Tic Delirious. That caused damage to the central nerve from the loud noise of the machines at work and the Howitzers in the military.

I think I spelled it right.

OY, he said if it came down to it, I could have surgury to correct it, if I wanted to. I do not want to go that route right now. Some kind of implant in the brain.

The topomax does affect the memory to some degree. At 100 mg, not so much but a little. What I notice the most is a difficulty concentrating, focusing. And when I play the piano, I have a harder time, make more mistakes with music I already am very familiar with. Good thing I don't charge my church to play, huh? They might fire me otherwise,,lol

Moderator, I feel your pain. Hubby's insurance premiums are outrageous and we have no dental insurance. Between hubby's appts, mine, and the boys, someone is always at the doctor. We spend so much a year it seems on medical/dental/vision. If hubby wasn't covered, I don't know what we'd do. Medications alone, even with insurance, run us quite a bit. We've put 2 through braces already, one left. It hurts

hang in there, NM, on that surgery. Listen to the doc and try the increase in the topomax gradually. See how it works and with the memory issues, try making yourself notes and lists. That works for me. Sometimes we have to give up something to find pain relief. when you hurt all the time, it's not good

Blah and I talked it over and I am going to increase it like the DR told me to. Within three weeks, I should be up to what he wants. I have to look at the schd. he gave me to be sure about it. If in the mean time it does effect me worse, I told her I will decrease back down.

NM, I've lived with this pain all my life. There are days that I will do just about anything, and I am not kidding when I say anything, to find relief. When the pain comes day after day after day, you get desperate. People that haven't lived with this type of pain have no idea just how debilating it is. Work with any memory issues you have for awhile to see if you can counteract them with other measures. Like I said, for me it's the issues with focusing that are more difficult. I just keep my lists and my pocket calendar handy for everything else.

Right now, with hubby's back, he's finally finding some relief and he is so thankful. A few years ago, I had begun to see a chiropractor. I had to see her everyday for about 6 weeks. The first 2 weesk were AGONY. Pure AGONY. She prepared me for that. Then I begun to see a huge relief. She even opened early for me. Then I began to go 3 times a week, to twice a week. I was just getting ready to move to once a week when...

Hubby called a halt to it. He was having to come home from work at 6:30 and watch the kids for about 45 minutes so I could go and it was $20 a visit, so it was expensive. However, a month of once a week, then the schedule was going to be once every other week, then once a month,,and so on. I had NEVER felt so good. NEVER. But he threw a hissy fit. The $$ and his time and he felt the a chiropractor was a quack. I stopped

My headaches are worse than ever and I suffer. Now that hubby has found some relief for his back, he said something about stopping going for his appt. I REFUSED. He said, it's expensive. $50 2-4 times a month, up in Raleigh. I said, I DO NOT CARE. When you find something that will provide any kind of relief, any kind, from that type of chronic pain, YOU DO NOT GIVE IT UP.

Hubby said, you sound like you know. I said I do. He said from when. I said,,the chiropractor. I thought he was going to cry

He wants me to go back now because now he realizes just what it was about but I can't go back now. I care for 2 special needs children that hubby CAN NOT handle, no way I can find anyone to care for them so I can make the appointments, no way can I carve out the time to go everyday for 2 months again, pay the fees and pay hubby's fees and the fees for my son's care right now. So I will wait.

But hubby has walked around now for 3 days, feeling lower than dog dirt, and I don't want him to. But, I said all of that to say this, if you find something that helps, PLEASE stick with it

NM, Mom and I can practically be meteorologists, b ecause we can sense when a Low is moving in the area. It is hard to work on a computer all day and know when a migraine is coming on. Luckily I now get them so infrequently that when I get one, it really knocks me on my but. I get the blinding pain, sensitivity and throwing up. The one the other day came on full blast in like 15 minutes....It was horrible..

oh, and work is so not sensitive to my needs..Grrrr

Mine are just pounding and drains me. Sometimes Blah just does not understand the drained part. I only got sick on the belly a couple times when they first started a couple years ago. It might be because of all I was trying to take at the time to get ride of it to. You know, to much meds at one time.

Squirrel, the ones that come on so fast are the worst. It's like being hit by a freight train.

And NM, that drained feeling is what I call a migraine hang over, although it's nothing like any regular hangover. And the sick to the stomach feeling? That's par for the course. The topomax and the imitrex assist with that, which could be why you're not getting that as often now.

AND, joy of joys, not every migriane acts the same either.

I'm extremely fortunate in hubby's understanding of the migraines. The chiropractor is the only time he's ever not been and he thinks of them as "quacks". He is truly regretting his actions and being such an azz about it a few years ago, especially now that I'm stuck in another really bad cycle where they headaches are coming one on top of another. But, with things the way they are right now, I don't have the $$ or the ability to go. It'll wait. I've been through this before.

the day of my last migraine, I woke at 445, laid around til 545, got up got dressed and went to work. I felt a little "off" but went anyway. I got about < 5 miles from work when it simply HIT like a train and I was sick. I made it home, called in and went back to bed in my cold, dark room. It was awful. I woke up at 1.30, had a piece of bread and some water and went back to bed and woke up again when Fuzzy got home. Total sleep in 24 hours, probably 18-20 hours. Migraines EXHAUST you. Absolutely sap your energy. Luckily Fuzzy understands a great deal and has a "do what you need to do, take what you need to take, see who you need to see" attitude. Combine the pain of a migrain with the near constant pain of spinal osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (hands, hips and knees) and you have one pizzed off, unhappy squirrel.

Ok, I am done BEEEotching.. :-) Love ya'll!

weather must be coming in, I can feel one lurking. To early to start the Imitrex already into the Tylenol had to get up and go to a funeral this am, between migraines and allergies today is not gonna be a good one. Daughter has a friend over and they want to ride the horses so I'm down at the barn trying to get everyone saddled without growling to much then maybe I can turn off the lights in the office for a while a take a nap till they come back. Hope everyone has a good weekend

I'm not sure what's up, Moderator, but I woke up with a low level migraine and it has gotten progressively worse. I've taken my limit of relpax and have broken out the big guns. I've already had a 3 hour nap and the headache is worse. Hubby just left for work so I have to wait up for my son to get home. Probably another hour or so. Then I can go back to bed.

Friend of mine went to the ER late yesterday with a migraine and she has actually been admitted for IV pain meds. 2 other friends are also suffering with severe migraines today as well.

And Moderator, I've always been told to take the imitrex type meds just as soon as I felt one coming on. The sooner you catch one the better. What did your doc tell you?

Mom, that's what he told me also. I do not have one today though. It might come with that rain that's coming in on Monday. I'll let you all know.

got to take a long nap.... Doc just said limit Imitrex to no more than 100mg in 24 hours. Problem I have is the side effects of the drug and the headaches, I feel like I've been on a 3 day drunk. The hangover type symptoms are nasty, dehydration, muscle soreness, fatigue, light headedness so I wait as long as I can. That being said I popped one while I was typing this.

there is a limit to my relpax as well,,2 in a 24/hr period. I'm gonna grab a bite to eat and go to bed. I doubt I'll make church tomorrow,,I'll be "hungover"

Sad isn't it? You take meds to take care of one prob. and have side effects from that you have to deal with and limited to what you can take to calm them down.

Pain and discomfort, gotta love it!

been up all night with the same nasty one from Saturday. I can just now take another Imitrex OH GOODY!!!. Nothing on my stomach but saltines and water for 36 hours. The vision in my right eye is blurry. My sweet wife wants to help but I don't know where to tell her to start. SHOOT ME comes to mind (just kidding?)

I'm with ya on the just shoot me, Moderator. I didn't get out of bed Sunday other than to take more pain meds and try to choke down something to eat, cause ya know you can't take those on an empty stomach. So my mother in law calls today and says "you're not trying to watch kids today are you?"

Well, yeah,,since for me to close puts 7 parents out of work. So then she asks if hubby (her son) stayed up to help me. Well, considering he worked from 6 pm to 6 am ,,,not gonna happen. She doesn't understand why he can't stay up to help me. I love my hubby to death but I'd rather deal with the kids by myself than try to have him deal with them after working a 12 hour night shift

so, where's they pistol and ammunition?

So far this storm has not done anything to me. I did go up one pill Sat. and will go up another this coming Sat. Nonthing has changed that I can tell so far from that either.

MOM...I got the pistol and ammo, in fact I think my wife thinks about taking it with her sometimes. 'cept she'd catch hell with it some of the places she goes. Mines starting to ease up I've been outside all day until the rain moved in. Then I went an got my daughter from school.

Thank you for the heads up on generic Topamax. It's only available in 100mg but that works for me. Now I only pay 7.52 a prescription. You don't know how much $$$ we just saved.

yesterday was a nightmare! trying to care for 7 children with a migraine is not something I'd recommend for the faint of heart but I made it through without shooting myself or any of the children. They were actually pretty good. Even my little special needs fella. Everybody even left early (well, my college class was canceled but I didn't tell my parents,,lol) I did run up to the college to see about upgrading my enrollment from an associates degree program to the bachelors degree program,,done with a click of a button, and I was home by 6,,hubby picked up dinner,,I ate, took another round of pain meds and went to bed. Woke up about 4 and took a motrin and woke up at 6,,feeling hung over but no headache. THANK GOD

I'm telling ya,,3 days was about all I could handle.

There are days that if I didn't have self control, I can see how people overdose accidentally on purpose

here we go again, and I've got way to much to do this week to slow down. Is it the weather or the pollen, mine haven't been like this in several years

I don't know moderator, I was thinking the same thing. I thought I was just losing my mind. My migraines haven't been coming one on top of another like this in years and years. I don't know if it's the weather systems, if it's the pollen, if it's stress (my mother in law is not taking well to the life changes hubby and I are making), or a combination.

Whatever it is, I do NOT like it

MOM.. I think you may have hit on it. Stress, financially we're having a difficult time. We had to sell part of the farm to a real estate developer to make ends meet back in January. The farm has been in my family for generations. The bank wouldn't re-negotiate our loans so we had to let go of 100 acres. It sounds like a lot , by the time you pay off loans, fix tractors pay medical bills and college tuition there's not much left.

I'm going to have to hire someone to help me this year on the farm for the first time. I had knee surgery in November and again in January and again in March. Doc says maybe by July I can start doing some farm work again. Hiring a farm hand that will work and not steal from you is hard to find.

Our son doesn't come in from college until mid-May and he isn't real happy working with me. I expect he'll find a reason to be elsewhere most of the summer. I don't blame him I would have to at his age. Sorry for the sob story, just been a tough day.

MOM....I just read your profile. You've got GOLDENS. WE have 2 rescue golden retrievers and work with a golden retriever rescue club out of upstate SC. We also have a Flat-Coated Retriever and work with the national club rescue.

moderator, stress can be a big trigger, especially combined with other things. And no worries on the "sob story", it's what this group is for. My hubby is a disabled vet, so we deal with that, 3 teenagers, a mother in law that is not liking our "life changes" but financially they are a MUST due to hubby not being able to work much longer. I see it coming. We have to prepare ourselves for it. I love my boys, they are good kids, but they have their own lives to prepare for as well. Sometimes things pile up.

I love my goldens, wouldn't take anything for 'em. Mine are not rescues. I got my male from our vet and my female from my sister. But if anything were to ever happen to them (they are 10 and 8) I think I'll do rescues. So many need good homes

Mom... I have thought lots about you and your husband the last couple of days. 12 years ago I had to "retire", I dislike disabled, my body just gave out my mind still works most days. We moved back home to the farm to help my parents. They both passed away in 98'. My brothers and sister wanted nothing to do with it so we bought them out. The farm business has to be run through my wifes name and I had to swallow my pride over this fact. We have modified things so I can handle chores easier. Some days I only get done so much. I went through a lot of depression and anger because I didn't feel like the "man" anymore. The adjustment is hard but prayer and clinging to one another is the answer in hard times.

I've been through 6 spinal surgeries and more knee and shoulder procedures than I care to count. I feel sometimes I live at the chronic pain clinic at Duke and at the sports medicine dept.

I have an idea what you and your husband are going through. I won't pretend to know exactly how he feels but it's not easy realizing you aren't able to work anymore. The paper work and redtape involved with receiving disability is unreal. We'll be saying prayers for you.

sorry for the dis-jointed thoughts one of the by-products of the pain and spinal problems

I finally caved, headed to the urgent care for a shot. A week is long enough, haven't had one like this for a very long time. Doc did give me Zomig. Had not tried that before. He gave me a nasal spray there as well as a shot of Toradol. also a prescription to bring home. I'm going to get an appt with my doc to see about adjusting my meds. I don't know what the h3ll is going on lately but it's gotta stop. I'm closing tomorrow just to have an extra day of rest. I think if I have to face 7 kids tomorrow, I'd be ready to hang myself. I'm so sensitive to everything,,lights, noise, smells, movements. The pain seems to be gone, I don't wanna sleep, but my head feels bruised and my coordination is shot. Probably not a good idea to try and take care of small children.

Hopefully the coming week will be a GREAT one

MOM...take care, hope you feel better soon

Wow Mom, seems like that one got a hold on you big time. I hope you finally showed it who's boss and kicked it to the curb.

Are you feeling better today?

it's been a very rough 8 or 9 days. I think it is finally gone. I'm almost afraid to say that. My head feels numb and I'm just wrung out. Completely and totally exhausted. As much as I've slept the past few days, you'd think I'd have alot of energy but all I want to do is sleep. However, the bruised feeling isn't there, the just out of reach, can't touch the pain but know it's there feeling isn't there, so I really think it's gone.

I appreciate the well wishes. I think I'm going to do a blog for the group during naptime today, see if anyone else out there needs support from us as well, lol,,we can't be the only suffering ones out there

big hugs !!!!!!!!!!!!

Woke up this am with a little pressure in the bridge between my eyes. might just be my sinuses, cause they are bleeding just a bit and stopping up. The pain is shooting straight through the center towards the back of the head. I took some sinus pills, but gonna wait on the other just yet to see if this is gonna be a migraine or not. I sure hope not. I'm off the next three days and want to enjoy them.....

I've got the beginnings of one this morning. I've taken some Tylenol but I don't have time to stop today. I'm like you NM mine may be sinus or allergies. We've been out in the pastures all week calving. 3 breach births this week, not a lot of fun got 15 more to go should all be down by Wednesday. Hope the weather holds over the weekend.

Everybody stay well

keepin my fingers crossed for ya NM- hope you have have a mild 3 days off and are able to enjoy. :)

sounds like a very busy weekend for you moderator- TRY to take it as easy as you can.

Thanks Wife. I do think it was sinus, cause it did get better.

I'm glad it got better, NM. Mine finally did. Yesterday was tough, the headache would back off and come back. Lasted a total of 15 days but it's gone completely now. I feel so much better. Not to say another one won't hit but it'll be a different one, if it does. I woke up this morning feeling 100% better. Not sure what happened but whatever did I'm thankful for it.

Mom ...I think yours came my way for a visit. Woke up this morning and the vision in my right eye was blurry. Grabbed the Tylenol bottle washed it down with a cup of coffee and headed out. Just got my daughter home from school, the house is quite and dark going to try for some Imitrex and a nap

good luck, moderator, I truly hope yours is short lived. There were times in the past 2 weeks that I seriously considered injury to myself

back up again things are a little better. More Tylenol, more coffee. We just had a thunderstorm come through need to go check on the last 2 expectant moms. Hopefully their calves are down when I get there.....Good morning
