Can you believe Zack Greinke of the Royals! 6 and 0 and just unhittable so far...Interesting article in Sports Illustrated about him. Had terrible bouts of anxiety disorders when he first came into the majors and overcame. Sorry Rose he beat your White sox last night!

6-0? On the Royals? $10 says he's living in New York or Boston before the year is out. Any takers? :)

No seriously, he is a great story. I'll have to check out that SI story. Unfortunately teams like Kansas City can't possibly keep these players around long enough to build a contending squad. They get snatched up by the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox pretty much every year - either at the trade deadline or during free agency. I know there are a lot of BoSox fans on here, this is not a slam against you guys or your team. Y'all are playing by the rules - I just think the system is broken.

Yes Stonecutter it is a different era in baseball. I remember when the small market teams like Kansas City and Pittsburgh use to not only contend but win the World Series...I guess in this day and age to compete with the Yankees you have got to spend like them although the Rays making it to the World Series last year was unbelievable considering there payroll. I have always admired players who spent there entire careers with one team but I don't see that happening anymore kind of like your boy Cal Ripken.

They get snatched up by the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox pretty much every year ------ Das, we're outta money honey :(...so I don't think hes coming our way

":(...so I don't think hes coming our way"

LOL, I don't mind as long as y'all keep him away from NY!

Well another black eye for baseball with the Manny situation. At least it is not steroid related from what I understand. I think I am one of the few who actually like Manny. I don't like all his antics and behavior but I respect his ability . I guess I appreciate all he did for my Red Sox. One of the greatest hitters I have ever seen. Beautiful swing...I think he is basically harmless and a guy who just likes to have fun...

I'm sure I will get some flack on Manny...

DukeBlueGuru, No slack from me, but, I am glad he's out of Boston. At the end of his season with the Red Sox he was making their life miserable. I appreciate him as a pitcher, truth, but, ya know, one bad apple can spoil the whole barrel :)...and if the Sox ain't happy...noone's happy....I do have good memories of him espically when him and Ortiz were next to each other, I think the two of them did compliment one another,i'm just as happy he's gone tho, espically now,we do not need the publicity.

The guy can hit, no question - I don't respect too much more about him though. Even going back to Cleveland, I always thought he was a diva and a prima donna.

Since it wasn't technically steroids I wonder how this affects Hall of Fame chances...

The Hall of Fame voters have got some hard decisions in the next 8 to 10 years. A lot of them will not vote for anyone linked to steroids. The record books are going to be a joke. I mean Clemens in my mind is the greatest pitcher ever, and Bonds, who I can't stand is the all time HR leader...Maybe add a seperate wing in Cooperstown saying Steroid Era Players. It's a tough call...Or put on there Hall of Fame plaque "Steroid Era".

Hey Karen, I guess the reason I can tolerate Manny is he was a big part in FINALLY bringing a title to Boston:-)

Well, yes, that he did :)

"It's a tough call...Or put on there Hall of Fame plaque 'Steroid Era'."

I agree that some sort of distinction needs to be made but it doesn't seem fair to penalize players like Derek Jeter, Randy Johnson, and Ken Griffey Jr. who to my knowledge have not used. They are going to get lumped in with a bunch of cheaters.

Sad about LA Dodger player Manny Ramirez. :(

DukeBlueGuru ~ I know how upset you are about Manny. He will return in July; you have to let it go...

He is on my fantasy baseball team so that really hurts me being without him until July. I would just like to know the truth regarding his failed drug test.

O's get Greinke tonight. 6-1 with a 0.51 ERA. We are putting up Adam Eaton, 2-3 with a 7.18 ERA. I wonder how this one is going to go...

:(

Yes Greinke has been awesome, the story of the season so far...I think the surprise team so far has been the Blue Jays...The Yankees at 17-17 is a surprise and the Rays are off to slow start...A lot of the superstars are off to miserable starts like Big Papi...Hey Stonecutter the Orioles have the bats, Adam Jones is hitting .370, Markakis, Huff, Scott, and Roberts...Just need some pitching, why did they let Bedard get away?

We got Adam Jones (and a couple of others) for Bedard. And truth be told, considering how often he has been injured and his unimpressive 8-5 record since leaving Baltimore in 2007 I think we got the better of that deal. Although I will admit I was begging the O's not to let him go at the time. (Guess that's why no one is knocking on my door asking me to be a GM!)

I love our bats, I thought early in the season we would be able to hit. But like every season I had a feeling our pitching would let us down. With the exception of George Sherrill, we really don't have anyone that great - and he's nothing to write home about. We need about 3 pitching prospects to all come around at once so we can be competitive instead of getting one here and there and immediately trading them - it's to only way we are going to be able to compete in the AL East.

Hey Stonecutter have you heard about that phenom the O's have in triple A ball. He is a catcher and I think his last name is Weiters. He is suppose to be an awesome talent and I am partial to catchers, I caught in Little League, Pony League, Colt League, and American Legion ball...Greatest position in baseball but very demanding...

How bout that sweep?????? 1/2 game from being in first place :) BTW, HOW BOUT BIG PAPI THE OTHER NIGHT?

Hopefully Big Papi will get hot! We need his power although Jason Bay has been hitting the long ball. A lot of great baseball ahead!

Red Sox/Mets this weekend! Preview of the World Series?

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all my baseball friends!!!

Happy Memorial Day my fellow MLB fan friends! :)

Congratulations to DukeBlueGuru whose posted comment made the Top Ten List of reasons why Carolina is better than Pittsburgh. Naturally, the topic of his comment was baseball. I think it is great when a baseball comment makes it to a WRAL morning news story on an ice hockey championship play-off! Way to go, Guru!!!

Congratulations, Guru! :)

Hey Guru, that catcher you were referring to debuts tonight. His name is Matt Wieters and by the sound of it he could be the next Joe Mauer. Here's a link to a Tim Kurkjian article about him: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&id=4214226

It looks like the O's may be giving your boys a run for their money in a couple of years! We seem to have a lot of good prospects that will all be coming up around the same time. Thank god and the man jesus, the pitchers are on their way!

Big win tonight for your O's...Weiters was 0 for 4 but he will come around...

Cincy a game and a half behind Milwaukee and St. Louis! :)

Way to go, White Sox!

Hey Skywatch how long you been a Reds fan? I remember there glory years with Bench, Rose, Perez, and Morgan. The 1975 World Series between Boston/Cincy was probably the best I ever saw...

I lived in and near Cincy from 1965 to 1985. :)

For what its worth, I wasn't around for the '75 series, but I hear the big red machine was something to see! My favorite series was probably the '91 Twins/Braves - not the best outcome, but you have to admit that game 7 was intense! The Diamondbacks/Yankees series was pretty sweet too.

You are right Stonecutter the Braves/Twins was a classic! I remember game 7 when John Smoltz and Jack Morris were outstanding going against each other. I think Morris pitched 10 innings in that game. The Braves are my second favorite team behind the Bosox and I think they should have at least 3 World Series Titles. I like Bobby Cox a lot but the Braves owner no longer wants to spend tne money they use to.

Guru, did you see the Braves cut Glavine? A little harsh, if you ask me. Let the man finish the season as a Brave. He's probably going to retire anyway, and the Braves probably aren't looking at a playoff berth this year. Make him the fifth starter, and let him finish his career with dignity. Just my take...

I was a huge Braves fan until yesterday. I don't even want anyone to know I used to like them. I can't believe Wren let Glavine go like that. First John Smoltz, and now Glavine. I am so disgusted with him right now. I might actually even pull for Boston now. Nah, can't go quite that far, even for Smoltz.

I agree on the Glavine situation. You would think they could have let him pitch the rest of the season with the Braves. He is one of the greatest players in Braves franchise history. Glavine always seemed like a class act. I am sure the fans down in Atlanta don't like it. But like everything else I am sure it had to do with money. I heard where the Braves had to give him 1 million in some kind of clause if he made it back. I don't remember the situation when he left Atlanta for the arch rival Mets. I am sure he was offered more money by the Mets. But along with Smoltz, Maddox, and Chipper he was the face of the franchise. He was a Brave in the late 80's before they started there run. I remember game 6 of the 1995 World Series when he pitched 8 innings of shutout ball against Cleveland and along with the Dave Justice homerun won the World Series.

I remember that too, Duke Blue, I was in Dallas when they won. What makes me the maddest is to hear Wren say it was based on his performance, not the money. What a lie. Glavine has got to be hurt. He worked so hard to come back and this is his reward? I'm so glad I didn't buy tickets to see them this year. I'd be selling them on ebay right now!

Well Randy Johnson finally got his 300th win. He is not known for his personality or exactly being a good teammate but you have to give it to him he has been one of the most dominant pitchers of all time...300 wins, 5 Cy Young Awards, over 4000 strikeouts, a perfect game, etc.

Bosox owning the Yankees this year!

Steve ~ great blog!

Wasn't major league ...but baseball nonetheless ...last night my folks and I joined my sister and her family at a Carolina Mudcats game and my niece who is in the Tar River Chorus (out of Rocky Mount) the chorus sang the National Anthem! :D We sat up in the Cattails Restaurant area and enjoyed supper while watching the game. :) I got a beef tenderloin in bourbon sauce, asparagus, and mashed potatoes and it was absolutely delicious! :) Everyone enjoyed the game and fireworks afterward! :D Mudcats beat the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx 4-0! :)

Skywatch ~ This sounds like a great time and a victory to boot!

Sounds like you had a great time Skywatch! I love minor league baseball. I hope to go to a Mudcats game soon. Can't beat food at the ballpark.

Sounds like you had a great time Skywatch! I love minor league baseball. I hope to go to a Mudcats game soon. Can't beat food at the ballpark.

I love minor league baseball, too, and it's the next best thing to the majors! :) Have been to at least 3 or 4 Mudcats games. :) But still haven't been to a Durham Bulls game ...will have to do that sometime! :)

That was the first time at the Mudcats Cattails Restaurant and it really is a nice eatery! :) Was nice not sitting out in the muggy air. ;)

Sounds fun, Skywatch. You gotta get out to the DPAP too! It's actually a very nice stadium.

What is the Cattails menu price range?

What is the Cattails menu price range?

Hey, DS! :)

Ball Menu items range from $5 to $11

Al A Cart Menu -

Appetizers range from $8 to $10

Salads range from $6 to $10

Entrees range from $14 to $27

All desserts are $6

Thanks, Skywatch. That is actually much more reasonable than I was expecting. I was down in Atlanta to see some Braves vs. Red Sox games a couple of years ago (got to see Schilling pitch, which was awesome) and their restaurant prices were unreal. I think it was $10 for a BBQ sandwhich - with no sides or nothin.

Any Cubs fans on here? What's everyone's take on Sosa?

At this point I wouldn't be surprised by anyone testing positive - even that high school kid from the SI cover who is dropping out of school to get drafted earlier. The whole thing really makes me sick. I started watching baseball around the age of 6 or 7, and even though I was a huge Oriole fan, I remember watching those great teams of the late 80's and early 90's like the Dodgers, Giants, Braves, Athletics, Reds, Twins, Blue Jays (even though I rooted against them - I still can't stand Cito Gaston for not pitching Mussina during the All-Star game in Baltimore). It was nice to just be a baseball fan. I am crossing my fingers that Griffey Jr. never used - I feel like he was the last great "genuine" player of the pre-steroid/steroid era.

I can understand why kids are turned off to the whole game nowadays. Hearing things like this turns me off to the sport too.
