about vegan and vegetarians

Dedicated to Vegans and Vegetarians who would like to discuss, share recipes, places to buy, etc.

Okay so my Hubby is laughing at me for starting this Group since I am neither. I am learning and very interested in learning how to cook and create new menu ideas. I have a Daughter by marriage who is vegetarian and I really do not have a stumbling block when it comes to her and cooking. Now enters a wonderful Friend of ours who is Vegan. We so love having her over for dinner and Family events. I just hate her coming up and having the same old things...I am learning whatever I make for us as meatetarians I can copy to Vegan with a little extra effort...meaning reading all ingrediants when purchasing.

So if you are interested in learning and sharing Please come in.

BTW I do love growing my own fruits and veggies...I have a wonderful garden every year and many fruits around our yard...many of you may already know this.

Our collection of veggie recipes.

Welcome Everyone!!!

T-Man Yes do share Please...I have heard of white pizza and have tried so good!!! Never heard of white lasagna but always willing to try.

Kid...Speghetti Squashes are one of the easiest things to grow here...my children love them...BUT from buing I would throw the seeds after cleaning them out out in the garden and they just grew like crazy...over my fence and all. As long as you keep on your counter they last a very long time.

I'm not a vegetarian myself, but I live with one so I end up cooking a lot of vege meals. It would be great to see some recipes, because the vege I live with has none. Cheese toast is a challenge for her. I've always been a decent cook, but this vegetarian stuff I have struggled with. I was taught by my southern grandmother how to cook...nearly everything has some meat product.

Yeah Hili...I will learn with you as well!!!

We have been surprised that the local Foodlion in Oxford has a wide selection of Vegan type foods...we have seen a few things at Super WalMart, of course there is always Whole Foods which is a ways from us...BUT seems more and more stores are getting a bigger selection.

Sue...we will have to Post the "Irish Creme" recipe as well...

Yes it is totally Vegan...

Over the last 10 years they have really come a long way with selection. I even like some of it and find myself eating without meat a lot more often. The selection is still really limited though. I enjoy cooking, and the same old frozen stuff out of the box gets old.

T-Man, that sounds excellent!

Hili, come shopping at Whole Foods with me once, and your cooking life will never be the same. Cheese-and-everything-else-you-could-possibly-want substitutes galore.

Headlong, we'll just have to strongly IMPLY what the Irish "creme" should be used for...LOL

I'd love to Sue...I can't even tell you how many times I've picked something up only to find out right before cooking it it had some type of meat product in it. Some of the substitutes in the regular grocery store are awful. I've also noticed in the grocery store, they don't seem to notice the difference between vegetarian and organic. A lot of these places have them lumped together in the same section.

Hili, that veg vs. organic thing bugs me too, as does the inclusion of whey and other "hidden" dairy products in so-called veg items. Earth Fare has a pretty good selection but is a little pricier than W.F. I also sometimes order products from a web site you might want to check out, Veganessentials.com.

Trader Joes has a pretty good vegetarian/vegan selection. (especially fake meats) I bought some vegan chorizo that I need to figure out what to do with it. I'm leaning on making scrambled tofu and then putting in a breakfast burrito with the chorizo.

Crocus, I still haven't been to TJ but need to check it out too.

You Go Crocus!!! Wow lots of recipes!!!

:) I was able to cheat and pull a few that I'd posted in another group.

Ohhhh this is going to be a tasty group! Yayy headlong! thanks!

Hey, Peacebee!! ((HUGS))

Thanks for the invite guys! I cant cook. I have no recipes to share. I am a pescatarian. I will try the easier recipes and work my way up..LOL

Geisha, great to see you!!! Pescatarians welcome, LOL

I'm looking for some good recipes! Getting old, have to eat right and try to lose a few pounds too!

*LOL* Crocus...anyway works well *smiles*

Sue...what do we make with that Irish creme *LOL* I know nothing *wink*

Wow Welcome All...

Ohh the group is growing!!!

Hey Brooklyn...good to see you around!!! PeaceBee too...Choclate nice to meet you!!!

anyone want to go to bojangles?

Yes, Cotton. I would like one of those sweet potato pies, a cheese biscuit and some sweet tea. :D

Hi, Brooklyn!!

Hi, Cotton. All hecklers will be promptly invited to dinner and converted. ;-)

Good Morning All...

Tawny Welcome!!!

Cotton...even I have to pass at the Bo's. I am not to fond of fast foods.

Morning!! :) And welcome to everyone.

I am going to ask my dad if he will drive me to Whole Foods on Sunday when he comes to take me grocery shopping. LOL..I asked my doctor about driving and he said not quite yet but in a couple of weeks. BUT he did give me permission to ditch the crutches and gimp around with the boot outside and without the boot inside the house. Without the crutches, I've almost broken my neck 4 times (this morning!) tripping over the cat. He had a grudging respect for the crutches, mostly I think that he secretly thought that crutches might kill him if they touched him so he steered clear of them.

I want to make seitan now that I blogged about it, so hopefully my father will be down with a trip to WF so I can buy the gluten flour.

Crocus...I meant to ask you...what happened that you are in the boot??? I must have missed where you Blogged it...if you did. Thank You So Much for helping with a lot of these recipes!!! I want to get my Daughter by marriage to come on and put some recipes up as well...she is the one that works at the Whole Foods.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!!!

My dog pulled me off balance on a hill and I fractured my ankle at the beginning of the year. I've been a huge baby about it as I've never broken anything before so I had no idea how annoying walking on crutches etc was going to be. Plus I managed to injure the right one so I couldn't even drive an automatic car, let alone my stick shift.

But YAY!! the evil crutches are in the closet. :D

Headlong, that's a great idea! She can start by blogging that cupcake recipe.

Crocus, ouch! I feel for you. Broke my ankle years ago...walking is one of those things we take totally for granted until one day when we can't do it. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Cupcake recipe?? Yummy!!

I asked Kat last night to join and showed her the site...she will do and put in imput...cupcakes and such.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!! Ours as busy as always *smiles*

Happy Tuesday Veggie People!

Today I torture the cat some more by crochetting. He just doesn't understand it. He is torn with the desire to cuddle with the afgan being made but then there are pieces of yarn that should be attacked. And heaven forbid he gets too comfy on it, because then I have to flip it over to get the next row and it disturbs his Highness. :D

Wow Crocus we have a lot in common...I also crotch and really need to get back into finishing some blankets I have started and not finished. Spring and Summers my gardens consume me...just love being outside. Winter months is great to crotch but end up doing so much other things I do not sit long enough to get going with it. Such a lost talent that has been handed down for generations Huh??? My daughters can do it but do not sjow a great interest as they use to...maybe when they get a bit older.

I love to crochet. I'm really mad right now though because I'm trying to do a ripple pattern and I thought everything was dandy with it, but after about 2 feet into the pattern I've noticed that it is much bigger at the top of the afgan then the bottom of it so I've screwed something up. If it was for me I'd just let it slide, but as it is for a neighbor, I'm going to have to figure out what I was doing wrong then pull it back and start over. GRRRRRRR!

My mother doesn't crochet or knit. I had a co-worker that used to crochet baby blankets for Duke hospital preemies and she taught me how to do a granny square. (her blankets were big granny squares) Since then I've been trying out new things and I thought this ripple was pretty easy until I noticed how much wider it was at the top. LOL.

Good morning EVERYONE! Is there anyone in here that drinks non fat soy molk? If so, is it supposed to be thick? It seems thicker than my regular soy milk? And if it is, do you know how to make it good or thin it out? Hope this makes sense. I am struggling to drink it. I have done rice and soy but this one is harder. Thanks!

That's so weird, Godiva. If anything, I think my nonfat soy milk is thinner than my regular. Is it a different brand?

It is westsoy? Or something like that...to me, it seems a bit thicker.

Weird. I tried the Silk lowfat soymilk and it was really thin and watery. Actually, it was too thin for my taste and I switched back to the regular stuff.

Crocus...the ripples are a lot of counting...usually 20...then skip over to the third...20...3 in same hole...

With kids I do not do muchon the counting stitches *LOL* I like stuff I can put down and pick right back up without loosing a beat *smiles*

Happy Thursday everyone!! :)

I am still chuckling over my father. He came over to bring me a b-day card and then he started to talk. He's an engineer so sometimes he says things that some folks might censor. He's chatting away and then he starts talking about that the day I was born which was kind of sweet as he's never done that before. And then he says, "Well you know how your mom is with pills.", which kind of threw me because I wasn't getting where he was going with that as it was kind of out of left field. So he clarifies, "She had to take another pill for a rash so she ditched the birth control pills so she wasn't taking so many pills a day. And 9 months later there you were."

LOL. Thanks Dad! 39 years old and just found out that I was a mistaken product of my mother's pill phobia. :D

And on another note. The card he gave me Meows when you open it which terrifies the dog and irritates the heck out of the cat. Win/Win.

Happy Birthday Crocus!!! Another Feb Baby!!! Hope you had a great one!!!

Happy Birthday, Crocus!! Hope it's a very happy one for you. 39 is not so bad.

Welcome Fox...Is this Tango???

Happy to hear about this group. I want to become a vegetarian....This looks great

If you have any questions or need good recipes ask away TheVickFamily. We're all a friendly bunch here and love to talk. :)

Hi TheVick and welcome!!!

Hello everyone...hope you are having a good weekend!!! It has been a busy week for us so I am enjoying sitting down relaxing.

Welcome Tawny...Glad to have you here too!!!

Another Welcome today...Raysson!!!

Yeah Ginger!!! Welcome!!!

I am excited the group is slowly growing!!!

I am guessing that everyone spent their day enjoying the beautiful snow and making a huge pot of vegetarian chilli! Seriously, who makes the traditional green been casserole with canned soup? I have several simple yet tasty variations, if anyone is interested...

No chili for me. I was boring and ate a grilled cheese and canned soup.

I would love to see the green bean variations. I have yet to make that casserole yet, but I love it when folks bring it in for potlucks at work.

You can easily replace the Crumbles to make a good pot of Chili Right??? I am assumng Crumbles are used where browned beef would be??? I have used it for sauce and Taco mixtures.
