I think that driving drunk is assault with a deadly weapon and should be treated as such. If a person is killed as a result, then I think it's murder. I do not see it as ruining that person's life by treating their crime harshly. They have more than ruined other lives. Plus, 2nd Degree murderers do not spend life in jail. They are out rather early actually and 1st degree murderers too in some cases.
I do think it is something from which a person can learn from. A first offense where no one is injured/killed offers an opportunity to learn. What part of my desired punishment do you feel would ruin their life and cause them to be a dependent upon the state? There are plenty of people with no license who make it back and forth to work.
