Airborne all the way. When I was there, you had to graduate from the Advanced Combat Training Academy in order to wear the patch. Part of the requirment was at least 20 Hunter/Killer Missions against the NKs. Some have compared the school to Ranger training. Most of our patrols were North of the Imjin River and along the zone. It heated up during the Vietnam war and was known as the Forgotten Frontier. The Brass kept the activity low profile because the US Forces were stetched so thin in Vietman and Korea. My brother as well as my step-brother served in Vietnam and all three of us were in service at the same time, all Army. Brothers were in the lst Cavalry Division. I think you may be familiar with that patch. Check out the below link on the Scounts if you are interested. Thanks for your service and for keeping our Country safe. http://www.imjinscout.com/Imjin_Scout.php

You may have experienced this as well. The winters were so cold over there, we crossed the Imjin River with our vehicles.

Jake, I found the answer to your question. "The Academy continued in operation at Sitman until January, 1972, when it relocated to Camp Casey. During its period of operation, ACTA was one of only two DA-recognized schools to operate in a hostile fire zone, the other being the 101st Airborne's Recondo in Viet Nam."

"I am guilty of talking smack about the French in the past"

That's okay Jake, I did too right after 9/11, but we more than squared our debt with France when we landed on the beaches of Normandy in 1944!

Hey Jake, glad to see your back and doing ok, I have always loved to read your posts. My son is on the USS Abe Lincoln. It's in the Gulf of Oman now, I'm reading that things are really getting heated in Afghanistan. Anyway, I always look for "Jakewildstar" posts so I know your ok. Thank you so much for your service to this Country.

Jake, I am not sure about the book but have read a lot about the scounts on line. I did not realize that the Cadre as well as the students were hand picked. I have never spoken much about my time in the Army, especially in Korea during the "Second Conflict", however talking with you made me realize that I needed to pass some of this on to my son. Thanks very much for that as well as your service to our Country. I have always said that freedom is not free and appreciate you and all of our men and women who protect our freedoms today. Thanks for helping me to open up to my son. He was very appreciative and said he had always wondered what I did while in the Army. I am glad that I was able to pass some of this on to him while I still remember it. There is a summary of most of the major incidents that occurred in Korea on the Imjin Scout page. I got a bit of frostbite on my cheeks but recognized the symptoms. One of my buddies got it on his feet but we were able to help him out as trained.

Jake - are you the one that used to blog here? Did you move to Texas?

Good for you Jake! How long were you out? Has the transition been smooth for you, how about the Mrs? I am proud of you and jealous - if I wouldn't have had kids and been "Mom" I would have gone back in the Air Force. I am so proud of you and ALL our soldiers and military! Thank you very much for your service.

You are right about Obama - he makes me sick and scares the heck out of me.

"Thank you so much for sharing this. I know this has to be hard for you. I really cannot find the right words to express how I feel right now or the right words to comfort you. The most I can get out is...THANK YOU! Thank you for all you do, all you have done and all you will do. You are an awesome American! I know Staff Sergeant Tia is looking down on you and appreciating this so very much. What an honorable way to salute him. I pray that God will be by your side forever! Thank you again!"

I posted the above on your blog. I din't know if you would go back and check it, so if you don't mind I want to leave it here, also. Thank you for everything! Just remember that God ALWAYS has a plan!

You are welcome. It was nice of you to blog about your friend.

Thank you for sharing it!

Are you really in Texas?

Got an internet friend who joined golo. He is in Florida.

Wow! I have a t-shirt from there...yeps. Yellow with big black letters. Ex picked it up when he was there for training. It's way too small for me now. :)

National Guard, Army...?????

hey! thanks for "having my back" but don't worry...this guy is a retired constitutional lawyer - did his undergrad work in Berkeley in the 60's, went on to Harvard, blah,blah,blah...one day he equated his pro bono service with the ACLU, to military service, and I called him on it...it embarressed him and he's been fighting me ever since... he's old, retired, moving to Europe in a couple of months, but he made a dramatic exit, insulting most people on here as he left, so he's been creating new ID's, in the hopes that we don't figure out who he is, because every time I do, I block him from posting on my blogs and that just infuriates him. He actually is tolerable most of the time, but he IS affected by the full moon, and that's what's happening with him right now... me, and oldschool, and Steve and several others have spotted his posts under his new ID's...I've saved all his more serious threats, so he won't really mess with me, he just gets a little hysterical whenever he's outed...

1st Cavalry. Fought the battle of La Drang, Vietnam. The unit was out numbered 4-1 but held on for several days. There is a book and a movie about that battle, "We were soldiers once, and young". It was written in part by the CO, Hal Moore who was the first man on the ground and the last to leave.

Jake, your Uncle was a brave man. I trust he survived that hellaous battle. I saw the movie as well. Based on what my brothers told me, it seemed to be a pretty accurate accounting of what went on in Vietman. The lst has a lot to be proud of, as do the other units you served in, including 2ID. The Iraq war is popular when compared to the Vietnam era. I think we had over 58,000 KIAs, exclusive of our losses at the Korean DMZ. It was not a very popular time to be a soldier. We went in and came home to a populace that despised the uniform at the time. I am glad there is much more support for those who protect our freedoms today. You all deserve it and I am proud of you. Thanks again for your service to our Country. People like you make me proud to be an American and a former member of the US Army. Keep up the fire!

Jake, you have a lot to be proud of. I think that (not talking about those experiences) was consistent with soldiers who served during that time. My son is 28 years old and I never mentioned the word Imjin Scout, DMZ or anything that went on over there until you and I started talking. The real heroes are those such as your Uncle who was wounded in the heat of battle, you dad and the young men who do not make it back from serving our Country. We all lost buddies during that time, and it really put everything in perspective. Let me know about the titles of the books. I am always interested in reading about that tough era of our time. Thanks again for all that you do to keep our Country safe.

Thank you for serving our country.

Jake, I don't guess I have opened up to him as much as I should have. However, I did let him know about what I did in Korea, the second conflict and the Imjin Scout School. Again, all thanks to the conversations you and I have had. I really don't like to talk about that time, present company excluded. I just thought he shoud know about the Imjin Scout insignia and wanted him to have all of that. Thanks again, always a pleasure to talk with a fellow soldier. And thanks for protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. Take care, Glen

Please know that any debate I engage in with you or anyone is solely intended by me to be a discussion of ideas. I do not intend anything I say as a personal attack and want to specifically ask you not to take any of it in that way. If it has come across that way, please know that it was not intended and accept my apologies for the misunderstanding.

I do respect your service and hope that we can exchange ideas / debate issues without you feeling as though you or your service is under attack. I very much value and want to hear your perspective on the issues. I can not promise that I will always, or even often, agree with it, but it's important that it be shared regardless. I look forward to hearing more of it in the future.

Hi! How are things in the big state of Texas?

Hey Jake! Hope you are doing well in the Texas heat! We were at fort Sam in the 96/97. I would hang out laundry on the clothes line....30 mins later dry in November!!!Have a good one Steph

"As a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Obama passed legislation to improve care and slash red tape for our wounded warriors recovering at places like Walter Reed. He passed laws to help homeless veterans and offered an innovative solution to prevent at-risk veterans from falling into homelessness. Obama led a bipartisan effort in the Senate to try to halt the military's unfair practice of discharging service members for having a service-connected psychological injury. He fought for fair treatment of Illinois veterans' claims and forced the VA to conduct an unprecedented outreach campaign to disabled veterans with lower than-average benefits. Obama passed legislation to stop a VA review of closed PTSD cases that could have led to a reduction in veterans' benefits. He passed an amendment to ensure that all service members returning from Iraq are properly screened for traumatic brain injuries. He introduced legislation to direct the VA and Pentagon to fix disjoint

Good Thurday Morning to you Jake! When are you guys heading back this way? We need to have a celebration of your return before you depart. I worry so much about our soldiers. My adopted soldier still hasn't written me...

Have a wonderful day Brave One!

The consequences of the inept Bush administration put hundred/thousands of soldiers in danger. Not fully equipping soldiers at the beginning of the war was a shame. Whether you are partisan or not you have to agree that the idiots who sent you off to war didn't care about these soldiers/marines etc...The "surge" should have occured at the beginning and is and always will be a failed strategy that historians and future administrations will see for what it is. My supports lies with the fallen, not with the Presidents, Kings, Queens, war heroes and wannabees that facilitate their rhetoric in daily campaign stumps.

Jake, just to let you know it seems like everybody is broke including me, lol. So we have reduced the price of our puppie...he was 10 weeks old last Sunday and is 30 pounds.

"It's a shame he didnt run, he is a great man."

Yes, indeed!

Sorry you had a long one! That blog made me so mad!At any rate have a good one.

You and Dh would get along well!I like shooting too.If you and yours are ever towards Bragg let us know.Y'all will have a home cooked meal! Steph

No problem! Dh retires 1 Jan and we have no reason to move.Pretty good place to live.Dh has done two tours in the stan and Brian(son) one. Dh has been on both sides.Brian was in the chow.

N.C. is a great place. I LOVE Texas but N.C. will always be home.

I miss the company of soldiers - of coure as an 82B I never got a chance to put a knife in my teeth run up hills and kill people, but someone had to show the 12Bs where the bridge was supposed to be.....

Have you read Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose - it's an eye opener to the hideous conditions of life for Easy Co. of the 506th PIR.

You probably have - but everyone should read it before they comment on how bad the Iraq war was handled.

Jake, thank you for your kind words. I feel as if I've been battling tonight. Defending Texas and our Country. First of all, thank you for your service. If you go to Galveston you will pass by Texas City. It is known for all of its refineries. Also, the explosion in '42. My father had a hand in building all of them. He retired 20 years ago. A new refinery has not been built since. If you pass by Texas City notice what was once Carbide. It is now a ghost refinery being sold for parts. How sad.

Our country is in much need of tapping into it's own resources and building new refineries, but most of all putting those men and women back to work.

"Im reading the book Ambrose wrote about Lewis and Clark "Undaunted Courage""

Next on my list - Lewis and Clark were surveyors though often cited as 'explorers' - surveying is not exactly glamorous.

Currently reading " A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs' Court" for some escapism.....

"The next book I have is about Kit Carson."

Wow...when I hear Kit Carson I think of a 72 hour no sleep FTX...ahhhh, the good ol' Cold War days....

also watched Band of Brothers the series. People have no idea these days about what real war is. Jake Wildstar

Jake I usually don't comment on a post I see when going to some one's profile but I had to tell you how right you are on this. I have also seen the band of brothers and uncles to tell of WW1 and WW2, even Vietnam wasn't a piece on cake. But in wars since ww2, our men do get to correspond and in this war they have so many ways of communicating with family and friends. When my husband was in Nam sometimes the only mail I got was a cut up ration container made like a post card and it would be so muddy and stuff I could hardly read it. Once it had a big mosquito remains squashed on the back. War is hell and it is costly but sometimes it is necessary. I personally think this war had become necessary. You stay safe and I will always appreciate what you've given back to this country to protect it. Just wanted you to know that.

I don't know if I mentioned this but I had 2 uncles (brothers) in WW2 and uncle Clyde was killed in angio beach, but some how when the memorial went up in our small town thy had put my uncle Allen's name on the monument. He'd come down from NJ to visit every year and laugh at the monument. They were going to fix it but he said no, it made him laugh. I just can't imagine what those poor folks went though. Our soldiers today don't know cold, hunger and no way out when wounded. They are just as brave but I too think having an outlet and also the good communications availabe is a big plus in our times today.

You wrote: " If you want to help the troops at least act like you support the war and quit giving our enemies propaganda and HOPE. Their leadership watches the news too, and every negative thing said by our own people is used to bolster theirs."

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Your statement should be repeated often, and loudly.

Terri

Glad to see you on the blog.Ds1 date got moved up to go to the sand box.He is calm and determined.I wish some how these people on here would understand what the military goes through in just one deployment. How the words say cut to the core of the amount of sacrifice. Thanks Steph

Airborne!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your sacrifice.

Oh, but you are, my friend. The calling to serve more than your family and yourself is a sacrifice. My dad was stationed in Panama. I wish you all the best! Nothing but the best.

Hi Jake! Hope you have a great Fri., and a wonderful weekend.

:-)

Beth
