Smile a lot -- it makes people wonder what you're up to! I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and that will always be my home. Now I'm into computer technologies -- it drives me crazy sometimes, but I love it.

Since joining GOLO, I've decided to start a Picture of the Day blog. Each day, I'll try my best to post a photo from my personal collection. While I'm at it, I'll ask a few questions or make a few comments to get your brains working and the conversation started. Everybody has a story to share -- feel free to share yours!

  • javajoe's Picture of the Day archives.
    • Here, you'll find all of my Picture of the Day posts from the past. Even if the day has already passed, stop in and share your comments - I'd love to hear them.
  • javajoe's Picture of the Day Group
    • Join the group to keep up with my daily blog post. Sometimes I post at 1-2AM, and by the time many of you login, my blog has disappeared from the GOLO homepage. So join the group, and easily find the link directly to my blog each day after I post!

Hi ya' Joe, long time indeed. Hope you're having a great summer. We're making plans for a Lake Tillery camping trip for weekend after next and that will pretty much be it for a summer vacation for us. I don't know about you but for us this economy is really kicking our butz and has taken a huge bite out of vacation funds. :( Oh well, this too shall pass...I hope. ;)

I love the sunflower pictures, especially #5.

Loved your sunflower photos. I get snap happy myself occasionaly, love to take pictures. Not as good at it as you are though. Enjoyed your blog very much, funny and maddening at the same time. I felt your pain darlin' ! Have a good one..

Stella

LOL! Okay... I never had to go out for additional supplies, but it's likely that I've yet to encounter this 'unique' brand of Barbie packaging. I must admit, I feel uneasy about this.

I just wish I could wrap my brain around WHY they do it in the first place.

It's not like Barbies are expensive.

LOL

Hello to you, JavaJoe! Thanks for stopping by. I LOVE your photos, but I suspect you already knew that. -Angela

Well get them off of your hard drive and onto GOLO, STAT! I'll be waiting. :-) -Angela

Have you met Willow? She is into photgraphy, too. You two might enjoy talking shop.

I am not trained in art - I just react to a picture. Honestly, I think you should blog the pics that move you, and see if they move other people. Get feedback to help your art.

awe =) you dont know that, lol Ill put some up in my image gallery and have it for friends only so join me =)

thanks BUT I dont, I have to really buckldown and learn lighting teqniques =) I really do it just for fun cause I thnk once I took it seriously I would lose what I have =)

Good morning, JJ~

Just stumbled onto your image galleries, and your shots are wonderful. I clicked the "Friend" button... wanna keep up when you post new pictures! How selfish is that? : )

Do you mind telling me what camera(s) you use? I will eventually get a new digital (SLR this time), and am starting to look around.

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Terri

"I've never gotten the hang of Photoshop, so I'll leave that to you guys who know what you're doing!"

Java - I hear that all of the time from folks. It goes something like 'Photoshop is too complex (or too hard.)'

It's not, really. Thing is, most folks have never been shown about three or four things that make the program accessible. Once you catch those (exposure adjustment, proper sharpening, layers and masking) you'll really start to use the program like a pro.

Hey JavaJoe, just wanted to tell you I thought your sunflower pictures were great! I really enjoyed them. Keep up the good work!

if anything java, dont doubt yourself, I take pictures of EVERYTHING and I mean everything even dish drains. YOU NEVER know what will interest someone. =)

I dunno how I missed responding to this before now, but I hafta know... after you chewed the feet off those Barbies, didya spit'em out?

My brother ate crayons when we were little. Man that made me so angry.

My mom said he had the most colorful poo, though. LOL

Hey Java, just saw your new pics. You do such terrific work. Got an answer for your hummingbird question. Rub a little Vick's vapor rub on the top of the feeder (most feeders have a moat at the top anyway) and string or whatever you hang it from. I've been doing this for years now and it works 100%. The only insects now at my feeders occasionally fly into the holes where the birds feed from...nothing to be done about that, that I know of.

Love yours as well...Great shot!!! Funny but today while the 3 were playing in the yard like they do daily...I have 3 feeders up...2 in the back and 1 out front...I sat down just in time or else one would have had a bullseye right in my ear *LOL* I get so close to them...they do not seem to fear me but bubble bees or yellow jackets chasing them they do fear...so funny to watch.

Hey joe. I have only had a place at emerald isle for 5 years and if there was a pier somewhere else or it was renamed, i wouldn't have a clue. Have a wonderful day.

I just love your photos!!! You're pretty good with that camera! Nice blogs too!! I apprecaite you sharing them!

:-D

I had to go check to see if your picture of the day was one of mine. I have several shots of the lighthouse w/o anyone in front, where it's the main shot, but I didn't upload those into my photo gallery. As for 'stealing ideas' ... isn't that what we're all here for? To SHARE ideas (not steal, silly). Anyway, I think it's great that you chose that photo at this time.

I like your pic of the day idea. Do you select from just your photos or do you choose from others people have uploaded? It's a great idea! I love looking at the pics and reading the blogs/comments!

Thanks JJ! Beckett has more galleries in my galleries! Yes, he's really patient. Problem is, we can rarely do summer shots because dogs aren't allowed on the beach during the "tourist" season.

Just joined your group - thanks for the heads up on that. I thought I'd seen all your pics but found out I'd missed a couple. I love your photography - you make me feel "so there!"

Oh no, JJ, no reason to apologize. And, I know all about "lame" pics - I was a newspaper journalist with a heart and soul that wanted to be a photojournalist but once in a while, all you could make a subject do was politely smile for the camera. That's why I enjoy photographing Beckett (my dog) - he has style!

I was trying to wait up for your Friday photo but can't hang any longer. Will catch it in the am!

Hi Java, your pics of Destin are great, Destin is one beautiful place. We were there on biz last yr & were only there few a few hrs. We flew down to Pensacola & drove over to Panama City. Did you drive straight to Destin?...it took 14 hrs or did you stop a few times? I would like to take my wife there sometime.

Thanks for the pics!!

Hi Java:

Re the Washington Zoo: I was a Girl Scout leader in Garner back in the mid-70's - had 2 troops at the time. We raised enough money over a couple of years to take 30 girls and 10 adult women to Washington, DC for a week, by bus. The Zoo was one of our stops while there & it was a wonderful visit. Places like the zoo are so educational & yet gives young teens a chance to be outside & active & enjoying life, rather than cooped up inside & having to behave more (maybe!)!

Perhaps you'll get a chance to go to the DC zoo sometime soon.

Somehow this post just now reminds me of the story where the tiger was killed after mauling a male teen who'd been taunting the tiger. Stories like that break my heart.

Bored to death? No way!! I love the pic - what memories it creates. I tried so hard to stay awake but was too tired - the little people (grandchildren) visited last night for a looooooong time.

Have a great day, JJ!

Good morning darlin. You posted the sweetest message to me, thank you for the kind words. I do enjoy your blogs and photos of the day. You do amazing work. I was feeling a little nostalgic last night, or rather at 2'something this morning. LOL!! I'd love to join your group. You have a great day sugar, keep those beautiful photos coming....Stella

Thanks for the trip to Destin info JJ, that helped a lot. With just a casual look at the map, I didn't realize it took that much driving time. Those all important rest stops are high on our list...it'll prob take us a little longer. We might even make it a 2 day ride.

I always look for your pic of the day even if I don't comment. You are an awesome photographer!! Keep 'em coming.

I have gone through and rambled through your galleries and blogs. you sure do wonderful work. You think of pictures angles and etc I would never think of. I'll keep my eye open on you. As Golo friends your activity will show up on my profile and I can see them as you put them up from now on. I love looking at photography. I think in a way it's neater than oil painting.

Thanks, JJ!! It was a beauty! I'm a sleepy gal but just had to come check to see if you'd posted. Have a great night!

Yes, we had a wonderful time. My birthday boy is a little thing, so he can fit most places.

I actually took a picture of the gorilla right in front of me, looking at me, but you can't see thru the flash's glare in the window.

You're keeping some late hours... you stay up most nights or is tonight special? Me, I'm a night owl, work til 2:30am then GOLO at home most morns.

Good luck with that switching thing. I'm much to old for that now, used to do it a lot. I've turned down job offers at work cause they say the shifts are subject to change/rotation!

Just got my camera last Black Friday -- and my new computer. It was a productive day. Had it planned out in advance but nearly missed out on the camera. Just a Kodak. Then I had to get the photo-printer. Someday I'll get the docking station *sigh*

Finances are purty tight, so I don't get out to many places. Cats are my only company, besides GOLO. (Boy, I'm starting to sound pathetic!) I would get tons more shots but they won't let us bring cameras to work - 'trade secrets.'

You should see the shots I got of my Christmas tree, though. Mostly close-ups. Kinda Hallmark Card stuff. They're hard to get cause I don't like the flash and I don't have a tripod - bad combination!

You must have a huge picture gallery! I feel like mine are taking up too many spots on my hard drive. Some here, others there, can't really control them. I bet you got a system that's great!

Man, sorry bout the drive..:(

I grew up in a camera family. My dad fixed them for a job, and did it at home on the side. People would give him old ones when they got newer ones. Mom was in the news business. We had all the Life Magazine specials on cropping, editting, stuff like that, but we didn't do the developing thing very often.

If you've never seen anyone take a shutter apart, it's amazing! All the little parts, so carefully laid out. Meticulous work, genius engineering...

Good morning.

I would like to make a suggestion...

When you blog your pictures of the day, maybe you could do them from your group?

It would give instant attention to your group then.

And you wouldn't have to add the blog links to the group, they would be listed automatically.

Just checking to see if you're awake...

Man, I love it when you stop down and use the apeture (sp?) priority. And I bet you're fanatical about cleaning your lenses. What camera do you use, and what lenses? Zooms? Impressive gallery...fave is sunflower hiding the sun. It is digital, right? Niiiice work!

http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/3393750/

It's important. Thanks!

GREAT pictures! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the hummingbird black/white one!

thanks java, thats what happened to yate mill im sure, it kinda fell to the way side until the city or state decided to take over

Java- Anytime that you want to discuss Naval Aviation, or any other topic related to the military, let me know. My Grandpa 'Buzz' was a Naval Aviator for over 20 years. He flew everything from F6F Hellcats to the A-4 Skyhawk. He still holds a World record for being one of only two pilots that have ever trapped and catapulted a jet from an anchored carrier.

Good Morning, jhope your day will be a good one.I like your pictures of the day i try to catch theme every day.Talking about snakes Idon't like them lol. I don't like to look at theme on TV or in a book. You are right birds will let you know if one is close by.We where out in the yard one nice warm day and birds where making a lot of fuss we looked to see what they where making a fuss over thought it might have been my cat but a big snake was coming right at us wished you could have seen me run didn't take me long to get in the house.Hubby killed it .We think it was after a birds nest.Have a great day.

Morning JavaJoe, have a great Labor Day!

np hun, I understand =)

I got curious about those a while back and looked them up. Some call it the Hummingbird Clearwing moth, or the Common Clearwing. Since they are not bees they don't sting, and people really freak out when you start playing with them.

Great picture though, they are very fast and tough to get a good picture of them. Great job!

Just saying bye, shuge... {{{ hug }}}

Take care.

Aw, shucks -- {{{ extra hug! }}} Bye, now...

I have been keeping up with your blogs. I have not posted much this week on blogs because of a bad tooth. got it out yesterday. I think you have such an insight when picking objects for pictures. I liked the parachute saying too when I came acaross it. One thing about it. You don't get many second chances when it doesn't open.

I know the feeling. I am trying to view this upcoming winter as a learning experience. I am dreading being the one to take care of it. That which doesn't kill me, only makes me stronger. Thank you for the wonderful pixs you post. I have started to have a newfound interest in taking pixs and the one on my profile is actually one I took myself. Beginner's luck with a tad bit of easy subjects!!

Thanks for the friend request. I think I might add a few to the image gallery tomorrow. I have to get ready for work in a few minutes...but check in tomorrow and let me know what you think.
