Smile a lot -- it makes people wonder what you're up to! I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and that will always be my home. Now I'm into computer technologies -- it drives me crazy sometimes, but I love it.

Since joining GOLO, I've decided to start a Picture of the Day blog. Each day, I'll try my best to post a photo from my personal collection. While I'm at it, I'll ask a few questions or make a few comments to get your brains working and the conversation started. Everybody has a story to share -- feel free to share yours!

  • javajoe's Picture of the Day archives.
    • Here, you'll find all of my Picture of the Day posts from the past. Even if the day has already passed, stop in and share your comments - I'd love to hear them.
  • javajoe's Picture of the Day Group
    • Join the group to keep up with my daily blog post. Sometimes I post at 1-2AM, and by the time many of you login, my blog has disappeared from the GOLO homepage. So join the group, and easily find the link directly to my blog each day after I post!

That's why I was puzzled this year, as I've had this same feeder for several yrs and none were coming . But , finally in this past week -- they've found it. A few yrs ago , I was sitting outside eating warm oatmeal (honey flavor ) and one came within inches of my face ! -checking out the honey smell, I'm sure.

Caught me during a break from weeding *LOL*

They did not get that big...the size of maybe a basketball or just a bit bigger. This is what made me look at the Giant Pumpkin Winners and what they did with that secondary root...also where I found keeping them off the ground on something that allows air to get all around so not sitting in moister which causes them to rot on the bottom.

We are both poking and hoping Huh *LOL* At elast we try and share ideas Right??? *smiles*

Got to go back to weeding...vacation got me a bit behind BUT really did need it!!!

Hi Java...OMG I did not think of the pumpkins like that...Gosh that is disapoining when you figure it out that way *LOL*

BTW when I was weeding and checking the pumpkins out I noticed several secondary roots digging in the ground...usually means the pumpkins are not far behind. I will keep you posted. Lots of flowers on them for sure.

Ohhh and what was the guess this picture answer??? I missed but agreed with many that it was a pineapple.

I am off to bed...one of these nights I will get there before Midnight *LOL* I seem to catch a second wind at 10...it was Karate night and I had some running afterwards.

Talk tomorrow!!!

OMG You are kidding me...I swore it was a pineapple that was not rip yet *LOL* See what do I know *wink*

I tell you I can take you some of those "Guess What" pictures *LOL* As a matter of fact I did BUT ended up putting it on Around the Yard photos I do...I had 2 seeds from the corn on a leaf, then my acorn squash which is white looking right now...could pass as a pumpkin *LOL* The Cantaloupe before the netting gets going on it looks like a Honey-do or another melon...

Makes one wonder if pics can be like a game of Whisper, doesn't it.

You have a great Wednesday too Joe.

God bless.

RB

You sound a bit like me...sometimes if things are growing in odd areas or where seeds are dropped by birds I leave it alone to see what will grow. Someone did tell me the Thisle plant is beautiful...gets real pretty flower that smell so good.

Good Morning Java...I just added a few...Okay 7 *LOL* Pictures of the Pumpkins to the Around The Yard July 13, 2009 Image Gallery for your viewing...sorry the secondary root is a bit blurry but best I could do...gives you the idea what it looks like...and like I said a toothpick

Well? Was it a green pinecone?

I told you a whole lot of sex is going on in our yards if you think about it...I may have to draw the line at playing "Toy" though *LOL*

LOL, you're right. I knew immediately that it was a green pinecone, right up until I read that someone said it might be a pineapple, then I started second-guessing myself. Another guess I thought was cool was, the underneath of a caterpillar. I'm having a pretty nice, relaxing couple of days off, thanks! I hope you're having a good day too!

Hey,hope you are having a good day.Your pinecone still looked like a green pineapple to me.Sure hit that one wrong didn't I ? LOL.

Java, I have a posseum (sp) on my porche. It looks to be a mid size and sitting on the banister. i hit the door to try to make it go away, but it just looks around. What should I do? I am afraid to go outside, and I will not let my dog out!

Yeh Java,seems like I've known you for some time now,like going way back when .Thanks for welcoming me to this community.Hoping my experience will be one of no regrets.

it looks like doughnuts...but I may just be craving krispy kreme!

Are you talking about those brown bugs that meet tail to tail and lay little brown eggs on the leaves??? I call them Stink Bugs...that is what people always told me they were because when you squash them they stink...really do not find the smell bad though.

Slugs and snails are a very easy to get rid of...you may laugh here...but take a small clean can such as tuna fish can, lid about that high, or such...fill it with beer. They love beer and will go in and drown.

Okay just so O know we are talking same bug...I tried to get a picture of one BUT can not get a clear one yet and only found one out there...they LOVE my spaghetti squash leaves and leave my pumpkins alone. Anyway...I have found a couple drops of dish soap and water does them in quickly *LOL* I try and not use pesticides on my fruits and veggies as you may tell by now. I do use Sevin Dust when it is needed...BUT I have tried Sevin on the Stink Bugs and they seem to laugh it off unless you get them good with it. Amazing what soap and water does *LOL* The other thing you need to watch with Sevin Dust when you have flowers as it will kill the bees which are needed.

Not a problem...anytime

I am going to try my hand at making some pickles as I have TONS of cucumbers...dill and possible sweet.

Good morning to you, I hope you are having a GREAT day!! ((hug))

Good morning Java! I hope you have a wonderful vacation. Drive safe!!

Happy Cheese Lovers' Day!

Are you angry with me or just taking a discussion break?

Thanks so much for Monday's mystry pics. I sent one out one time to some friend's asking them if they could help me....been having to send them the answer on Tuesday ever since :)

sounds like they did the right thing there joe ! heck we didnt have cell phones when i was 16.lol.

I want to tell you that I have enjoyed your photo of the day blogs also. I don't comment a lot on them (or other blogs as well), but try to catch them most days. You and I roam the same areas a lot, I recognize a large portion of the country scenes in your photos.

I busted the budget and got a Nikon, tiny pocket camera, the good one is too heavy/clumsy...so I rarely used it. Pics will show up this weekend...I hope!

Hi Java. Thanks for leaving a comment. I do enjoy your pics and hope to see more. Yes the heat is going to be tough the first part of the week. Glad I'm not working for FedEx anymore. You be safe too! Take care. CW

Hi Joe -

Howzit going for you today? Keeping cool?

Have a safe and wonderful day and weekend dear friend.

God bless.

RB

JavaJoe ~ I really miss "Picture of the Day". Your daily posts were always enlightening, especially the rural topics, of which I was unfamiliar. You will never know how much I appreciate your time, effort, and commitment which were required for this successful yearlong endeavor. I am grateful for the exposure of a partial year, and I am honored to say that I am sad.

ok, I know the obvious is watermelon :), but, yesterday I was sitting very close to my HDTV and they showed some frozen yogurt, I said, thats it, so...I think its strawberry frozen yogurt with chocolate chips (that look like seeds) :)

Hiya Joe! Rev pointed something out to me in my last blog, but I just saw the post today. The graphic for my blog is a picture of Magic and Savannah playing in the snow last January: http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/5767459/

Rev pointed out that the second dog (Savannah) looks like a deer. I was telling her that I love that picture, and as many times as I've looked at it, I never noticed that. There was a small oak stump out there that had sprouts on it during warm weather, and the dead leaves were left. So when Savannah reared up chasing Magic in the snow, it put the stump behind her head so all you can see is the sprouts and dead leaves making Savannah look an awful lot like a reindeer prancing. How cool is that! I thought it was the kind of thing you'd appreciate. Hope you're having a good week!

Hi Java...was a bit concerned since I have not seen you release your Mystery Picture answer nor seeing you around...Hope you are well!!! Just thinking of you!!!

supp Joe!

was there any Mystery Monday this week?

I do love your mystery Monday blogs!

Hey...I think I missed Mystery Monday :( this week

Photography is an immediate reaction, drawing is a meditation. Henri Cartier-Bresson Hi java,just stopping by to say hello :).

The camera is my tool. Through it I give a reason to everything around me. Andre Kertesz

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Hope you are enjoying your week. Always, thank you for our mystery pics, always look so forward to them.
where have ya been
Photography is about finding out what can happen in the frame. When you put four edges around some facts, you change those facts. Garry Winogrand--- Hi Java, I wanted to stop by and wish you a happy weekend. Hopefully with fall right around the corner you'll have the enjoyment of framing some of the most vibrant colors of the leaves mother nature has to offer ;). Fall is my favorite of all seasons, it's almost like taking a vacation yet going no where...your mind will take you there :). I do miss New England in the fall but taking a ride to the mountains generally satisfies my yearning to be there. Happy weekend ...
Good morning! Thanks for all the snake info. Wonder why those little bug gers are so difficult to identify! I'm actually not scared of them, a rarity as I understand it. I actually dug one up one winter when I was transplanting some bushes and I took it to the vet to see if it was poisonous or not! (it wasn't) The biggest problem here is we have LOTS of little kids around and I would hate for them to get bitten by one, even if it was non poisonous. This one was a baby, but somewhere, there's a mother! We'll just have to keep our eyes peeled. Thanks again, and I love your pictures!
Hi Java...see the things we teach one another *wink* Yes it is very easy to grow a Pineapple...though you must bring it in like a Banana Tree in Winter months I believe...my Mom has hers growing in her home. She just put an apple in it.
BTW did you see where I found out by research and local Farmers how to beat those dang pesky bugs??? It is something that you must stay at the roots all year long...once you miss you can give it up. And since you are not getting it near the veggies it is safe. I expressed my concerns over using pesticides on my fruits and veggies and they were 100% in agreement with me. If you missed I will E mail you...remind me though because you know how side tracked I get *LOL*
Have a GREAT one!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OiOlnoyljk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Godspeed Mary Travers. Thank you for all the beautiful songs you brought and sang to us over the years..Like Puff, we'll never see you singing or playing along the Cherry Lane, but , you will forever be in our hearts :'(
Tomorrow is Monday. Will it be mysterious?
Just a howdy, as I haven't seen anything out of you in a while. Hope you're doing well & life is good.
Terri
Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad writes all day. He scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a POEM, they give him $50!"
The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad writes all day too! He scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls his a SONG, they give him $100!"
The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad also writes all day. He scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls his writings SERMONS. He reads them in church, and it takes EIGHT MEN to collect all the money!!!"
Dont say that Con Amor did'nt make you smile today! Have a great day!
Hi! Hope life's treating you well. Haven't seen you around these parts lately. I thought it was because I changed Golo shifts, but I guess you have been absent.
Hey, Java. Good night!
I like it! :)
Greetings, JJ! That ferris wheel looks might inviting. Hope that life is treating you and yours well.
