about bad dog

WRAL put out the call for a few bad dogs to train to be good dogs. We've chosen three and you can watch their stories and hopefully their transformations every Thursday during the 5:30pm newscast beginning July 10th. CBS's Greatest American Dog Challenge airs a few hours later at 8:00pm
See all of the submissions here.

We'll meet here after every segment to discuss what happened and share our own stories about bad dogs.

I have a 16 month old golden retriever. His biggest problem is I can't calm him down when company comes over. He is all over them. Of course in a friendly way, but 70 lbs of muscle is a bit much. I need help with this. I have grandchildren who can't come to my house unless I block the dog in the bedroom or lock him in his crate - I don't like either of these options.

I need help.

Fran

Youngll is right! It is very easy to train a dog to ring a bell when they have to go outside. Some dogs will not bark or whine to let you know they have to go, so this method is very effective. Hang some bells within reach of your dog's nose. To start, ring the bell yourself before going outside. Soon, your dog will catch on. Youngll is also right about starting training right away. I have trained 4 GSDs over the years and have had very few problems with any of them. Start early training and you'll have a good dog.

My wife will not let us have a dog. She says she is the one who will end up taking care of it so anytime we suggest getting one, her answer is NO!!! We do have a cat though :-).

I have had my dog for about 4 yrs now. She is a dachaund. She is a very hyper dog and pees if you reach to quickly for her. She doesn't like company at all and jumps all over them. She likes to growel at them especially if they are small children. Mainly cause the smaller children make sudden movements and she really doesn't like that. Another conocern that I can't seem to break her of is chewing up my window blinds. She just started it about a year ago. She always has to see outside. The problem is I don't like leaving the blinds up when I leave the house. I can't put a gate up to keep her in one room cause she will chew that up as well. I don't know how to stop her from doing this aside from just taking the blinds down. Does anyone have any suggestions on any of my problems? This was my first dog aside from the ones I had as a child. I have had her since she was 9wks and perhaps I haven't been the best trainer, but I am hoping I can teach this old dog some new tricks. Thanks! CJ

Trubluhvn: I'm not sure if you can do anything about the peeing - I've heard that spayed dogs have a tendency to do that, especially when frightened. I would wager that your dog is bored and that is why she wants to look out the window and tears things up. I would suggest a crate. That would keep her safe and your house safe, too. You might want to check out this site for some good tips - it's the Dog Whisperer's site. www.cesarmillaninc.com. His philosophy is exercise, discipline and affection - in that order. Perhaps your dog needs to expend some energy on a nice long walk before you leave the house.

DRG Help!

I have a biter, barker, jumper, digger.

Yeshoney: Wow. You've got your hands full. My dog trainer once suggested this to me: if you've got a digger, put a balloon in one of his dug holes and cover it lightly with dirt. When the dog goes to dig, the balloon pops and scares him. Mouse traps are also effective.

For the jumping, my trainer suggested this: When the dog goes to jump, put your knee up into the dog's chest while saying "NO!". Not hard enough to hurt him, but enough to let him know that jumping is unacceptable behavior. This really only works for larger dogs, not sure what you would do with a smaller one.

Don't know what to tell you about the biting: consult a pro, perhaps.

Some barking can be controlled by distracting your dog's attention. If he tends to bark at the window or something outside, a squirt with a squirt gun might do the trick, or startle him with a loud noise, like coins in a metal tin shaken near his ear.

For everyone on this site who has an interest in dog behavior and training, I highly recommend Cesar Millan's show, the Dog Whisperer which airs on the National Geographic Channel. There is a new show every Friday evening at 8, and a repeat at 9. Very informative.

Hi all. I am the trainer from the bad dog segment. I have really enjoyed working with this contest! I also agree wholeheartedly with RisingStar's previous entry about "bad dogs". Our canines companions do everything for a reason. So, if they are being "bad", we owe it to them to figure out why and to help them work though it. I will be answering questions about the "Bad Dog" training segments on Debra's blog. If you would like to find out more about Bark Busters, visit our website at www.BarkBusters.com!

Welcome to GOLO, Jenny at Bark Busters! It's an absolute pleasure to have you!! -Angela

We have four Whippets. They are great dogs. Wonderful breed, the Whippet. They are sight hounds. They look just like Grey hounds but they are smaller.

Greetings! I am a professional dog trainer and I highly recommend the TV show on Animal Planet called "It's Me Or the Dog" which airs Saturday nights at 8pm. Victoria Stillwell, one of the judges from "The Greatest American Dog" is the trainer that is featured. She uses reward based, gentle techniques and the show is appropriate for adults and children. I also recommend the website www.dogstardaily.com. This site is a great resource, compiled by Dr. Ian Dunbar, for anyone interested in dog training and behavior. There are behavior tip sheets that you can download.

FRAN, We have the same problem with our boxer-bulldog mix. He is wonderful with us and our 8 month old. He even knows a wide range of commands.. but it is like he gets super excited when company comes. For like 30 minutes he licks them and trys to play with our company whether they want to our not.. if you get an answer.. let me know :)

Paige

Hi Paige,

Here are some suggestions that I share with my clients for calming an overly enthusiastic dog when company comes. First, make sure your dog has been exercised vigorously before the company arrives. Also, make sure your dog is somewhat hungry (just don't feed a meal just beforehand). Have the leash on before you open the door and immediately give your dog a "project" to work on while your guests settle in. This could be a Kong toy stuffed with a little peanut butter, kibble, and biscuits all packed into the Kong. By the time your dog is finished the project, their arousal level will have decreased. Give your guests some treats and have your dog practice sitting in exchange for a treat.

Hope this helps!

IHAVE OWNED DOGS ALL MY LIFE. I HAVE TRIED MANY DIFFERENT WAYS OF TRAINING MY DOGS. SOME GOOD, SOME NOT. BUT THEN I WATCHED THE DOG WHISPERER AND LEARNED MORE FROM HIS SHOWS THAN I HAVE IN 40 YRS. IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR DOG FROM ACTING CRAZY WHEN U GET HOME OR GUESTS ARRIVE, YOU MUST COMPLETELY IGNORE THE ANIMAL. EVERYONE MUST DO THE SAME THING OR IT WILL NOT WORK. I HAVE A 90lb BOXER THAT I COULD NOT STOP JUMPING AND ACTING STUPID WHENEVER I CAME HOME OR HAD GUESTS. I TOOK THE ADVICE OFF OF ONE OF THE DOG WHISPERER SHOWS AND IT TOOK ABOUT 1 WK OR LESS AND HE DOES NOT JUMP NOW.I THINK SQUIRTING AN ANIMAL OR LOUD NOISES, TO TEACH IT SOMETHING IS STUPID AND CRUEL.HE'S JUST LEARNING TO BE AFRAID OF AN OBJECT OR BEHAVIOR INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY LEARNING MANNERS ACCEPTABLE TO YOU-THE ALPHA.BEFORE TRYING THIS METHOD,PLZ TAKE TIME TO WATCH A REAL EXPERT- THE DOG WHISPERER.WHAT HE SAYS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE.ITS COOL TO WATCH HIM HANDLE ANY KIND OF DOG PROBLEM W/NO SCARE TACTICS NEEDED.

I was at wits end with my two labs, when i started watching the dog whisperer. i went to the dog whisperer website and found links to local trainers who use the dog whisperer techniques. we found elaine at carolina dog training in apex. Before you ask...NO, i do receive any financial benefit from promoting her, but I recommend her b/c if your a dog lover and a mom, you know how vital it is to get your ducks in a row before a baby arrives and she transformed our lives making bringing home our first baby a fun family experience for all of us, including our first two babies- jack and blue, (labs)

Daisy's problems include-getting into the trash bags/cans, chasing cats and other small animals-squirrals, birds, moles, etc,and not walking correctly on a leash. Muddy's problems include-hyperness, chewing everything, get, and getting into trash cans, not listening, housebreaking issues, notusing bathroom outdoors on leash, not walking with leash, skittishness, needing constant attention from humans and thinks human food is dog food that is also same for daisy. what can i do??

My dog Naruto tends to pull real hard when on a leash. He also tends to not like males including my fiance. We have had him since he was a a puppy. I bottle fed him. I really do not want to have to get rid of him he is two but if I can not get help breaking him of the leash and not liking men then I will have no choice. He has bitten my fiance three times now. We have to muzzle him when we take him some where because I fear that he may see a male and bight them. Please give me some advice adkins795@aol.com
