Resources

about year-round parents

In this group we discuss the year-round experience from the parents perspective, share information about track-out camps and any other topics that relate to having children in school for nine weeks and off for three. The goal is not to bash year-round schooling but to embrace it and help one another as much as we can along the way.

Feel free to invite other parents, PTA members, and even school principals and teachers.

Had one, or both, in YR for 10 years now. We are very happy with it and would not voluntarily go back in all likelihood. While I agree it may not work for everyone, people who bash it most likely have not tried it and therefore don't really know of which they speak.

We are on track 2 here too. I totally agree with what faith trust and pixie dust said - "As soon as the kids get tired of school, they get a break...as soon as the parents get tired of the kids, they go back to school" That is totally how it is around here too!! It is really nice to be able to go on vacation during the off times instead of the peak times. We went to Myrtle Beach this past trackout and there was hardly anyone there the week after Memorial Day!!

I've had one kid on traditional track and one kid in year round. We love year round. My youngest dreads going to high school on the traditional track.

We have been on track 1 and track 2. There are good points to both tracks.

Track 2 for us. It will be weird that with only one week off they will be in another grade. It is just a different progression I need to get use to. I am a big supporter of year round and think all the middle and el schools need to go this way. We need to make the best of the money we have, if we can spend it in the classroom instead of on building the classroom that would mean a big benefit for our kids.

I actually blasted Angela when she moved here and was not pleased with being thrown into YR. Sorry Angela!!

Year round sounds like a scary experiment when it is happening to your kids. But 99% of the folks end up liking it after a year. Vacations during off peak times arr a big plus. However, I think the biggest benefits are academic.

Every 9 weeks or so, you get a chance to intervene if your child is not getting a concept in school. If they have mastered all the subjects, you get time to pursue a topic at a deeper level than was covered in school. It is a win- win situation for leaning - no burn out.

I agree that the special focus summer camps are a problem for some tracks. As more schools move to year round, I think this problem will be resolved.

I think that we need to make most of the schools year round and make the "application" schools traditional. Now you either have a base school that is year round, or you hve to apply to get in, or be lucky and apply for a transfer to a year round (That's what I did). Wouldn't it make it easier to change all the schools to year round and have parents that don't want year round apply to get into traditional?? Most parents in year round love it. I have friends that applied to transfer into my year round school and couldn't get in. Didn't make sense. Wouldn't you want kids out of an OVER-CROWDED traditional school put into a year round that has room??

I think Wake was going to go year round but the lawsuit put an end to that. What is the name of that group - Wake Cares or something? Sigh - a few stubborn parents and now everyone in the county has their taxes raised to make a minority happy.

Yes, Wake Cares is the name of the group.

It's today, it's today, it's today! Yeah school is back in! My now 2nd grader rode the bus today for the first time (used to carpool)! Hopefully, everone got their school supplies and their little ones off to school ok today!

Yep, my second grader made it off today as well, looking extra adorable, if I must say so myself. The supplies were quite heavy though! We need a blog about this. Who's going to start it? -Angela

My daughter started kindergarten today ;'(

"My daughter started kindergarten today ;'("

Try not to cry. I know it's tough! -Angela

They all grow up way too fast!

Staggered entry - one of my neighbor's boys started today too... He has had his backpack packed for 2 weeks! Hard to let them go...

So anyone want to say where their kids are? I'll go first - mine is at West Lake...

Jabrn: If folks don't want to share school location publicly, you can always create a group blog post and set it to "members only." Just an idea. -Angela

No biggie - just wondering - We have had some school growth issues lately - last year my daughter had 28 kids at one time in her 1st grade class... Some friends that were at Ballantine (not too far away) only had 17... It just makes me wonder where Wake County's head is sometimes? This year seems better - she only has 20 (so far).

So without divulging schools - anyone else having issues with class size?

Today was quite a sad day as I shipped my daughter on the school bus for the first time...she got on there and walked to the back of the bus with her big brother...she acted like she has done it a million times before...

I am more sad for selfish reasons, I have finally realized...I am so happy my daughter is starting her treck that will lead her through the rest of her life. I am sad that my little helper and social butterfly is gone...I now have to keep the 2 year old happy by myself. I have called everyone that is listed in my phones phonebook, because I can think of nothing else to say to a 2 year old.. :(

Last week was just staggered entry...today was the REAL first day of school...

Just making the rounds in my groups - I will be away for a bit. My new job has me training in Kentucky for a month, so I will try to check in every so often, but not as much as usual. Hardest part will be not being with my DH and daughter for 4 weeks! Thank goodness she is in school and will track out the week I get home! Everyone take care!

Tax Free Weekend coming up next weekend. Let's all pick something up to help out our classrooms.

I used the Curiousity Corner of Cary for three days this week, and they had no kids any where near my son's age. Will not use that one again.
