Good idea, Made! We've noticed some changes in traffic patterns as gas prices have reached the $4 level.

I'll do a two-wheeler count tomorrow and let you know the results in here. My commute is about 12 miles long coming down Old Apex Rd into Apex (from Cary).

I totaly agree. That intersection where I-440/I-40 West/intersects with US.1 South and US.64 West is a total nightmare for some and I don't drive it unless I'm heading toward either to the other side of Cary or towards Wilmington. You have people that drive with not a lick of common sense sometimes and it causes plenty of accidents during the late afternoon rush on the home from whereever. And folks going toward the South Hills/Crossroads Plaza area don't even think before cutting someone off in the next lane. Pathetic!!!

Durham's traffic situation is even worst. I have seen plenty of accidents on that stretch of I-40 between Fayetteville Road and the Streets of Southpoint. Even worse Fayetteville Road at Highway 54(near the Waffle House and Walgreens) is congested almost everyday!!! Not to mention driving along extremely congested and dangerous US.15-501 at Chapel Hill-Foreham Blvd. which is the 8-mile trek of traffic between Durham and Chapel Hill.

Hey Brian, When you get the chance, mention Chapel Hill sometime. Especially where the traffic jam is even worst along that corridor of East and West Franklin Street near the UNC Campus, and the US. 15-501 Bypass at the Highway 54 intersection near Glen Lennox Plaza.

Raysson... Thanks for the note about Chapel Hill. Please give me a call whenever you run into any unusual delays out there. The number is 1-877-PILE-UPS! ;)

Another spot that is a major pain in the azz is #1 south from Tryon road until you pass hwy 55. You always have some idiot driving about 30 mph in the LEFT lane trying to pass everyone then cut in at the last minute to exit. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way people, it's THAT simple!

That stretch of US 1 is tough -- especially when people pull onto the shoulder to exit onto 55 in the evening.

Thank you for the fender bender blog. I really appreciate it.

Hi Brian,

I had a curious question about something I see every morning. I drive Six Forks Road heading to Old Wake Forest and soon as I get on the bridge over the beltline, I see people move from the Bridge access lane, go through the light and turn left on Computer Drive and wing it around to make a left to access the beltline. Several times on of these KNUCKLEHEADS have cut me off doing this to avoid sitting at that light a few extra seconds. It is annoying and aggrivating to see every single morning. Is that...er...legal?

Hey Brian... Just wanted to tell you I think you do a great job with the Traffic.... sure is a BIG difference than the traffic we used to see back home huh??

Hi Brian. Just wanted to update you that 15-501 Northbound was still down to one lane this moring as repairs continued on the bridge at Cornwallis Rd. Slow commute again this morning! :-(

Has anyone else noticed the huge increase of traffic on 55 from Holly Springs to Apex (and vice versa)? It's made my commute go from 30 minutes to 50. It's only been for the past few weeks. What's the deal?

Brian,Did you do a lot of research on Triangle traffic before you worked at WRAL? Have you always been interested in such? It has got to be so hard to keep track of all of the roads and highways and byways around here.

Hey, Cartab. Thanks for the interest.

My only experience with traffic before coming to work here was limited to avoiding it and dealing with it when I play Sim City on the computer.

I've lived here all my life, and I've worked in news here for 12 years, so I know the roads pretty well. That being said, this has been a learning experience! My spatial reasoning skills get a workout when I'm up there describing traffic problems on the map!

Regarding traffic on Hwy 55 between Holly Springs and Apex…YES, the traffic dramatically increased about 3 or so weeks ago. It started on a Monday, like a switch had been flipped. It was almost as if school had started, though I know that’s not the case. Maybe it was one of those year round schools kicking in? It’s going to be a total nightmare when the traditional school starts. Don’t know what changed, but something did!

TY Brian for this mornings report on the 70 bypass jam. I took 70 buisness instead and was able to get into raleigh with little or no jams at all. Great Job !!!

Capital Blvd. between Burlington Mills Rd. and Durant Rd. has been terrible the past few mornings. This morning it took 20 minutes to go 4 miles. I just moved to Wake Forest and can usually get to work on New Bern Ave. in 35 minutes. Now its taking around 45 to 50 minutes. Anyone know what's going on? Maybe school?

Newwake, whenever you run into any unusual delays, please give us a call at 1-877-PILE-UPS. We don't have cameras along Capital Blvd., so we rely heavily on tipsters!

hi brian i was just woundering if there is any reports about any flooding around granville county? i hope you have a good day..

Hey, Linda... sorry that I didn't see your note in time! I was focused almost solely on TV coverage during Hanna and didn't have a chance to check here. ;)

What gas station here in Raleigh are limiting gas because of hurricane IKE

Can you tell me how many tickets have been issued to drivers who do not turn on their headlights while driving with their windshield wipers on? I'll bet NONE!!

GM Brian! I got a question for you....

Q. Is it lawfull to take pivtures of an accident scene and post them on here in a blog? If not, what about sending them to WRAL for their use?

The reason I ask is because I could have gotten some good shots yesterday of an accident involving a moped and it's rider who was laying in the middle of the street from his injuries, surrounded by emergency personell.

Just curious. Thought the moped accident would have made an excellent satfey blog.

Made: It should be lawful, as long as you were on public property. Of course, we'd ask you not to post anything graphic.

TY!

Hey all~ I have a question regarding morning commute traffic. I will be heading around the bottom of the beltway(440) from Zebulon to Cary (i know, huge commute) exit 290, around 8 am. I have heard the traffic gets bad on the Cary side. Can anyone tell me hwo bad it really gets? I ddi the trip today in 40 minutes but that was at 10 am. thoughts on 8am? I am new to the area so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tincup... Many factors come into play here, but in general, traffic on westbound 40 (Inner Beltline) slows down around Gorman Street and remains slow until you get to Highway 54. Speeds pick up considerably as you head toward Wade and Harrison.

Let's get back to blockhead's comment....There are signs everywhere that say 'SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT'. None of them say unless you're going the speed limit. Move over, it's the law. Yes, the law. Signs with black borders are regulatory signs, just like speed limit signs..and you know what...the 'slower traffic' signs have black borders.

There doesn't have to be a sign everywhere for the law to exist. Have you ever read the paragraph in the handbook that says 2 lane secondary roads have a speed limit of 55 mph even if there isn't a sign?

All I can say is, let's start using some common sense when we're driving...maybe then you won't get so many 'salutes'...

whats happening on 540 at lumley road right now

can you give us traffic advice if we're going to downtown Raleigh tonight?

Can anybody tell me what the roads are like from Stem to Henderson?

I have a question about the traffic alert system that has been installed on the major roads here in the Triangle. Last year I contacted the DOT as to why accidents and traffic delays on NC 147 were not being posted on the sign boards on I 85 and I 40, thus alerting drivers of delays well before they became part of them. I got some poor excuse that the speed sensor system was still being installed (despite earlier news stories that it was completed) and that Durham city police were not providing updates to the system in a timely manner to post to the system. The bottom line is this: why can I find out that there could be inauguration delays on I 95 in Virginia on alert board on I 85 between Hillsborough and Durham, but I can't find out about a 4 mile backup on 147 until I'm sitting in it? As someone who drives to RTP by I 85 and 147 every day, this system has been a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars considering how it is being utilized. Can anything be done about this?

This morning, Hwy 55 in Angier had a major back-up. I can't find any info about it. Anyone know what happened? Is there a reason it wasn't covered on the WRAL Traffic Alert section?

I think some drivers need reminding to turn on their lights in fog and rain. I see too many cars driving without their lights. They forget that lights are not just so they can see but so others can see them. This is especially important in thick fog or heavy rain. You need to be confident that the coast is clear before turning. It's quite dangerous. And I believe it's the law to have lights on when there is any kind of precipitation.

I'm betting you've had a ball today with all the activity. Hang in there. Get another cup of coffee and doughnut. ;)

I need a nice, long nap, OldRebel!

Brian, Do you know why Rock Quarry Road was blocked off this morning? We were coming from Clayton to go to the Flea Market and could not get past Food Lion. We followed others through the parking lot to Battle Bridge and were turned back again. Thanks, Claudia And Carlos

I would like to ask some traffic advise. My son has to be in North Durham - Stagville area each morning for 5 weekdays in April. He needs to be there at 9am. We live in SE Cary near Holly Springs road. I am trying to decide between the 40, 147 to 85 route versus 440 to 70 to 85. I know the second is slower but I am wondering if there is less chance of major backups on this route. Most of the travel I do in the morning is in the Raleigh direction so I would appreciate an advice. Google says its an hour either way but Google doesn't know Cary & RDU traffic!!! Thanks for your help.

cmollenkopf: I think the best rule to follow in this case is to avoid I-40 West between US1 and Wade Avenue. That's our dependable, daily congestion point in the morning. If you can pick up 40 West at Harrison or Aviation, you probably won't have too many delays all the way to northern Durham.

Of course, we can't rule out an accident causing a backup But when it comes to congestion delays, 40 West, northbound Durham Freeway and 85 are usually busy but moving in the morning.

Of course, you can always make sure on WRAL.com/traffic or watch WRAL News on Fox 50 before you leave in the morning!

Thanks for the answer Brian but LOL I posted that on Sunday March 8th. The incident you told me about was on Thursday.

Does anyone have any advice for me. I work off Davis drive Exit 280 off I40 and I travel every day I40 to exit 312 to pick up my child from daycare. It is taking me 1.5 hours to get him. I tried 55 to ten ten to 50 and that wasn't helping me. Any advice out there? :(

I am wondering why there isn't an express way/by pass so people that live in Cary can exit and let everyone who lives in Garner and Clayton get home! :(

It is completely discourteous and actually a partial cause of congestion when people who think, just because they are going the speed limit it is OK to ride the left lane. If you see someone behind you trying to go faster, MOVE. I can tell while a car is 100 or more feet behind me if they are coming up faster than I am driving, and guess what??? I move!!!! Let them pass. Even if I'm already speeding myself. It's not your job to dictate how fast everyone else can drive. If you see 50 cars stacked up behind you and wide open road ahead of you, it's a good bet you are holding up traffic. Once again, MOVE! Why you can't you set your cruise control for the right lane and leave the left open for passing? It's courtesy and also helps to avoid road road if you just move, ride slow and steady in the right lane what's the big deal?

Dawn, I agree with you 100%. You left out one thing though. I always mover over to let some one pass that wants to run faster than me. I have no problem with that. But do not come up to my bumper running 90 mph and think that riding there is going to make me move any faster. I know that this has happened to all of us, trying to move over and an idiot all over your bumper. Give me a break, I'm getting over fast as I can. Anchor down and use your breaks or your insurance.

Construction route in Durham.....Use caution when driving on U.S. 15-501 in both directions. The NCDOT is replacing the New Creek Bridge on that section of the highway between 15-501 near the Garrett Road intersection(not very far where Mark Jacobsen's Toyota,Oak Creek Village Shopping Center is). Also I think they're expanding the Chapel Hill Boulevard traffic to six lanes(which needs it badly due to the heavy traffic that goes through there everyday!)due to the construction of the bridge. Use caution and drive safety.

take the trucks off I-95, and take their cargo off and put it on steel rail trains...not add more lanes for more trucks to go faster on.

Brian, occasionaly when reporting traffic on your a.m. TV show, please also show, if it makes sense to, the traffic cams in Fayetteville on Bragg Blvd at both ends of Fort Bragg: the Spring Lake North end & the Fayetteville South end. It seems most of the traffic issues, relatively speaking, in the greater Fayettevile area, is occuring at these locations, especially traffic coming thru Spring Lake trying to get into the security gates at Fort Bragg. The back ups at these locations start very early in the morning & last up thru mid-a.m. Thanks for considering this suggestion. And, thanks for the great info that you, Bill, Kelcey, Elizabeth & all the others provide on the morning show!

Hello, My husband was the victim of a hit and run on I40E near Lake Wheeler Road on Thursday night (5/21/09) around 10:00 pm; we are trying to see if there was anyone in that area during that time and witness this. The car hit him in the rear travelling at a high speed which cause his truck to flip 3 times. We are asking for any help in finding the party responsible for this. Thank you

tsimmonssr: Thanks for that note. There's only one DOT camera set up on Bragg Blvd. and that's at Wilson Ave. in Spring Lake. When you run into an unusual backup, give me a call: 1-877-PILE-UPS!
